what trans to use???
i have a crx with fully built b series motor, motor is at the shop right now, with all my mods i should be putting down 350-400 hp. I dont have the money rightnow to build a trans but i have an ls trans and a ys1 trans sitting in my garage. what would you guys suggest using? its not a race car, its street driven but most of my friends have newer top end cars and go well over 100mph, the ys1 will prob only put me at 110mph tops so i dont know what to use...let me know what input you guys have or any kind of first hand experiance in using both transmissions.

Re: what trans to use???
alright thanks guys, my ys1 is from a jdm b16...im not sure where im gonna be at with top end speed so i cant tell yet. The ls ys1 is dif from the gsr one?
and yes i actually have 3 sitting around, Im selling an ls ys1 that i just pulled from the junkyard, and a b17 gsr ys1 that came from a swap i bought, the b17 had a spun bearing but got a good deal on the whole package so i picked it up used the trans in my hatch with an ls, that **** ripped hard. if anyone is interested in any of the trans send me a PM. i also want to know that there really is a difference in ls ys1 and a gsr ys1...

Re: what trans to use???
oh and about the motor being built...the head is mostly stock so i cant really rev it out that much, i should prob just go with the LS trans, short gears are nice but hopefully the car will be fast enough where i dont even notice. I could also just throw the ls in for now, keep the ys1 out of the car, eventually build it with an ls 5th gear and lsd...
anymore ideas would be nice too so keep em coming! thanks

I say go with the shorter gears and rev it out also.
i know your head is stock...but if you have a built motor might as well build the head also.
I have a built motor and had the gsr tranny in it....i was curious as to how the LS tranny would do...once i had it in...i hated it....cars that i was beating with the gsr tranny were either sticking with me or beating me with the LS tranny. I mean it could be all in the setup too....i had a pretty big turbo...i went back to the gsr tranny and love it!!!

Re: what trans to use???
I have both an ls and a gsr and am torn between which one I like more. I lean more towards the ls because I have an ls motor; that even though is fully built the head limits it to around 8500 rpms. And that = about 120 mph in 3rd in ls, and 120 in 4th gsr. So I say if you are going to build a vtec head go with gsr since you can rap it out. But for a boosted motor with lower rev limit go with ls. Just my opinion if you want best 1/4 mile.

Re: what trans to use???
the cable ys1 gsr trans has very short gears, it's not even close to a cable ys1 ls trans. Like stated earlier your gonna have to raise your rev limit, if you want a higher top speed. I was reving my car to 8,200 I have a jdm y1 cable b16 trans with a ls countershaft/ring gear it puts my final drive right at 4.4 maybe a little shorter, my car has taching 7,200rpm at 120 in 5th I have yet to top it out yet, but i'm guessing it would top out around 140 on the dot.

Re: what trans to use???
I just put a post up about this in drag racing because i have a built b series with ls tranny, and we were debating what tranny to use also. So this past weekend i went to the local meets on my slicks(24.5 m/t) and from a 3rd gear roll about 80mph the car just takes off and i shift into 4th at about 115mph(9000rpm) and the revs fall to about 6200 or so......I would like to get a gsr 1-4 gearset though and keep my final drive.

Re: what trans to use???
thnks for all the input guys, it is only a day project to switch out the trans so i might as well try both, ill prob start with the b16 trans first if its way too short of gearing and i spin excessively ill try out the ls and see what happens. wish it was an easier project but i gotta go through it, ill be pissed if i throw the ls in and totally hate it though lol
