Default What is the proper way to check spark plugs?

We all know you can tell how the engine is running by the plugs, but what is the right way to do it? I mean, if you make a run but then come back to your house or whatever, won't the plugs be showing how the engine was idling??

The plugs cannot be read to see what happened that day. Reading plugs is just a way to check tuning and look for problems, but even then it will take 1000 miles before the plug will tell you anything, unless of course they melt or are covered in oil.
