Default What is the procedure for checking turbo shaft play???

I recently bought a turbo kit from ACCORRACER. I'm able to wiggle around the turbine and compressor wheels. Is this "normal." Is there such a thing as normal turbo shaft play? I can tilt the compressor/turbine assembly enough so that if you tried to spin the turbo by hand, the compressor blades will rub against the compressor housing.

Here is a pic, how would I check for turbo play?

If I push the turbine assembly in and out along the Yellow arrows, there is play. If I push the turbine assembly along the RED arrows, there is also play.

A little play on the yellow axis is pretty normal. It's the red axes that are important. You want little/no play in those directions.

your turbin assy. should never come in contact with anyother part of the turbo. LIKE THE WALL...........

The situation you've described, the turbocharger has a worn out set of bearings, even though you can force the whweels to come in contact with the walls, the turbocharger may still provide usable boost provided the unit is still balanced, BUT it does need a re-build before it's put back into service, otherwise you will end up with a bad turbo.

Side to side shaft play is normal, and there is a spec. limit (it depends on the turbocharger, and no i do not have a spec sheet unfortunately)

In/out play is not normal, and indicates a warn out thrust washer inside the CHRA..

Cliffnotes: Bad Turbo, Abnormal Shaft play, Needs a re-build.

So does a turbo go bad? I'm assuming all this has to do with lubrication?
