Default What kind of welder are all you DIY'ers using? MIG/TIG?????

for my VW, i wanna make a 3" tb cause this 2.5dp and test pipe into 2.25 nuespeed catback aint cutting it, anyways, i am gonna get some bends form summit and weld them

will one of those 2-300 MIG welders from sears cut it? they are like 80-95 amps and some can weld from 3/16" to 1/4". a quarter inch is definetely enough, i just wanna be able to weld ic piping, exhaust, fmic mounting tabs etc.

I'll probably be doing work on B18Flip's car also, turbo gsr, anyways

is that thick enough for the flanges? do i weld the 5 bolt turbo flange right onto the mandrel bend?

any input would be cool, TIA

I use a gas torch. You can't weld stainless or aluminum with it, but if you learn with the gas torch, you can weld with anything later.

from what i have seen my welder use, and he also says that MIG is easier, tig takes more skill

i just wanna small practical portable , probably MIG, enough for piping and small stuff, no framework or whatever, something for a beginner, but not obsolete either

Actually you CAN weld aluminum and stainless with gas. It is recommended that you use hydrogen because its colorless, so you can see the weld area better, but acetylene should work ok. You also need to use the right flux, which acts as an oxygen shield, and obviously you need the appropriate rod. The flux needs to be on both sides of the weld to block oxygen from the backside too.

Miller 135 MIG is a good moderate duty welder. If you're going with a wire feed MIG, spend the little extra for some cover gas. Those gasless mig welds look like ***.

for now, i dont really care about pretty welds or noise, i just wanna get these flanges attached to these mandrel bends and the o2 bungs and I'll be happy, just wanna make a functional exhaust, with decent welds and sealed, besides, i am sure the quality of the welds is in the welder, i'll buy some bends at auto zone and practice

air liquide is a little bit cheaper then miller and a great product.

dont cheap out. there really is no welder that is like middle of the line. u either got a pos or a good one.

as long as u got one with argon.co2 your set. MIG is so easy. i have a little 400$ eletric and i mean i can weld exhaust pipes with it but its a grind weld grind weld type job.. doesnt look pretty but it gets the job done.

like i said, i want function, not aiming for pretty, and i am sure i can attain that for 300 bucks....i hope so

if you just want something cheap, then go buy a campell-hausfeld from WAl-mart...get the wire feed fllux welder...it's like 150 bucks and will get the job done. Don't complain when those flux-cored weld like cotage cheese

I have the new Lincoln from home depot I can weld aliminum and stainless steel. I could not live without tools. Welding is one of the best things out their but don't forget about brazing it also comes very handy and looks really clean. I always braze when it comes to intercoolers and fuel tanks, and some times piping.

now for exhaust, do you need to have perfect and pretty welds?if your welds come out really thick and ugly, but sealed and functional, can you dremel the excess weld off, or would that make it weaker
Don't complain when those flux-cored weld like cotage cheese

i use a gasless wirefeed MIG, and i can get some damn fine welds out of it. Don;t know what you guys are doing wrong to ahve it look like swiss cheese.

A gassless wirefeed will work just fine for the welding you wnat to do

If you havn't welded before get scrap metal to practice on, start with thicker pieces so you don;t burn holes and get frustrated

And don;t forget a good mask/helmet, sunglassses don;t cut it (Don;t ask how i know )

Too bad your not local cause i am selling mine to move up to bigger and better

Very good tip. A nice self tinting helmet can make a major difference to a novice welder. It makes it so much easier to see what you are doing.

i also found that welding at night outside was easier becuase there was no other light around and no glare in the helmet, wich makes it MUCH eaier to see what you are doing
