ping ping ping/tick tick tick/rattle rattle rattle etc under load.

probably not going to be able to hear it with open downpipe unless you're on a dyno.

detonation typically sounds like ball bearings rattling around in a can.

Backfiring could be from a rich air fuel ratio or improper ignition timing. You can also get a lean miss that sounds like a backfire but is actually due to a lean condition. If you get too lean you may not even hear the detonation because there is not enough fuel in the mixture to try and light off early.

Are you using a wideband o2 meter to monitor your air/fuel ratios? without one you are shooting in the dark and may damage something especially in boost. A good tuner can get a car close without one by monitering the ecu's short and long term fuel correction values. But this is just to get a starting point to fine tune with a wideband.

Just my 2 cents on the subject since I am currently in the tuning stage with my ITR and have access to a wideband. If I did not, I would buy one as they are considerably cheaper than buying a new engine. Good luck

If you hear lots of popping it might be lean misfire... heh. You need a wideband to know for sure.

You'll never hear detonation with an open DP.

If you want to simulate the sound, take a coffee can, put some BBs into it, wrap a towel around it, then rattle it around.

Strip down to your bare *** and sit on a flipped over cooking pot and fart... Thats kinda what it sounds like..

It also sounds like marbles being dropped into a coffie can..

Or if your really brave, grab a manual tranny v8 and get it moving and put it into 5th so your rpms are like 500rpms or so in 5th and floor it....... Thats exactly what it sounds like..

Ahh yes, forgot about that one.. Now how can we duplicate that..... I would say to take the fuel map and remove 50% of the fuel and go out and boost up..... Thats the closest sound that your ever hear to detonation..

advance the timing a bit for some more fun... make sure to fill up with 87octane first.

Add yes, forgot about the timing.. 87 octane is a must.. Also helps out a little better if you remove the intercooler.. This would also be a good time to think about a oil misting system so you can spray some motor oil into the charge pipe..

Also a 55 shot of nitrous will help, forget adding fuel, you dont want to burn all your gas up doing this test do you..

In my experience.. it usually sounds like: "..uh oh", and occasionally "..aww sh*t!".

Either way, you'll know..

detonation can sound like a variety of different things... i have heard a car detonate and sound like bb's in a can... and others sound like a pressure cooker under the hood. The loudness of the sound also doesnt necessarily mean the savarity of the detonation. I have had an engine ping LOUD and not knock as hard as an engine that ping softly. ( going by knock sencor Mhz readout.)

Mine sounded close. It was more like "....(VTEC Engagement needle goes up to 8000rpm) ****! ****! Something is seriously wrong John....there is a **** load of smoke that just came out the exhaust. Do you see it?....this is not ******* good."

Sounded something like that.
