What does ___ step colder actually mean?

Default What does ___ step colder actually mean?

So, with more power you engine puts out you are supposed to get colder spark plugs. (i read that its for every 75-100 hp more go one step colder) But i'm just curious about what is actually getting colder. Thanks ^_^

Its the amount of heat that is transfered through the spark plug to the head.
