What to do with $1400??
I got a b16 coupe, its got header, exhaust, cai, i got $1400 to spend on it. i also got a direct port kit i could put on it, but dont really spray it, maybe s/c or turbo, i found a jrsc for $1K.???
Save it.
$1,400 normally isn't enough to put together something reliable. Although it might happen with used parts and if you tuned it yourself, but $1,400 will be a stretch.

You can put together a VERY reliable setup for 1400.00. You just have to buy wisely and buy used here and there. You could also sell the nitrous setup and throw a little more cash into the pot. That'd definitely get you enough to put something together though.
Used Garrett 50 or 57 375.00
Injectors 180.00
Used mani 300.00
Intercooler/piping/couplers 225.00
Ecu chipping/basemap 72.00
Oil line stuff 110.00
Blow off valve 100.00
Used TIAL Wastegate 175.00
Piping for dump/dp 65.00
1602.00
Those prices are conservative too...you can get stuff cheaper
Go with DSM 450 injectors to start and a 1g DSM bov and you knock 150.00 off that total easy. You could also buy an ebay cast mani, not the runner style junk. I hate to endorse that, but honestly they're very reliable as far as I've seen. That knocks another 200.00 off that total. This ends up opening up some cash to find someone capable of tuning your setup.
You could definitely do a reliable setup for less.

I dont disagree that it can be done for very little money, but finding a cheap clutch isn't going to be as easy. Also, since i dont do my own tuning, that's a rather large expense by itself.

I wouldn't really call that reliable, that price isn't really including any exhaust work, dyno time or an actual tuners time either (unless you read up and teach yourself). Plus used parts aren't going to last forever or if something happens unexpectedly you wont have any spare cash laying around. Save it

it can be done BUT youll have to haggle your *** off. just because you have 1400 and bought a kit doesnt mean your done. you WILL run into various problems like leaks..various parts like fluids, gaskets, and little **** youll need.then factor in tuning..i pieced together my kit for cheap but i alos chose to rebuild my motor which i highly reccomend..atleast get fresh water pump/oil pump and gaskets

Well, having built a substantial number of setups very close, and in some cases less than that budget, I'd disagree. Dyno tuning isn't necessary, as you can have a reliable and affordable street tune done (once again I've tuned countless cars on the street for 200.00 that have run reliably for 2+ years). Also, finding someone to weld up some stuff isn't very hard, nor is it expensive. If you can find someone with basic MIG skills it can all be taken care of.
You simply have to be resourceful, do your research, shop wisely, and meet some locals that can give you a hand. Many people build cars along these principles, it's really not a mystery.

I understand your point, but the OP only has $1,400. I really wouldn't put all my money that I have into the kit and have nothing left over and just expect everything to last and the fact that even if he was able to tune it on his own, his still needs a wideband (minimal $250 for something decent) and most likely a boost gauge ($35-$60 used/new) and even if you can weld up your own exhaust you still need a muffler that's going to last (minimal $100) and whatever good deal you might be able to pull on getting the rest of the exhaust. Also you still need an aftermarket clutch (minimal $250) and a walbro 255 fuel pump (~$85-$90). So just with that it takes the $1400 and puts it up to a little over $2100 and that's just your basic setup with used parts and an ok tune.
Hey I am not saying that it cant be done (I've done it), but its really not that ideal to spend all your money on parts that can give out at any given time and having nothing left to spare leaving you stranded without a car (if its your DD)

You can keyboard analyze all you want, but I'VE BUILT SETUPS THIS CHEAP AND CHEAPER multiple times. What I posted was a guideline. Like stated above, others have done it....there's no disputing it period.
Honda sellers are kings at giving away parts cheap. Young kids dump off parts like crazy...you gotta be there to scoop it up. I got a GT3082R for 550.00 with two turbine housings on here that I've used for two years now. The deals are there...you just have to have the cash and be there to grab them.
I've seen guys give 400 bucks to a kid and walk away with 1400.00 worth of stuff because you give them the quick cash.
Plus, if you can come up with 1400 to spend, you can come up with another 400-600 if you need it.

My advice is to save longer. The reason kids sell stuff at crackhead prices is because they don't keep enough <U>'oh ****'</U> money around, and when they get in over their head (school, tickets, insurance, etc), they go 'oh ****' and sell things for pennies on the dollar.
As long as I've lived, I've always had money to my name. Mainly since my assets are in used tools and a fairly expensive old muscle car (i'd die if I sold it), I always keep cash around. I've made some good investments because the cash was ready & waiting.
When you get to $2200, you are ready. You can start looking for parts now, but expect to pay 30-50% more than you currently expect, just in case. $2000 worth of partly-used parts will get you an excellent turbo kit.

i agree 100% but youre putting too much faith in the average person. ive met alot of people with dicks for hands who couldnt figure out how to connect 2 pipes, so even if they found deals they'd havbe no clue how to make it all work right.
for all we know the OP doesnt even know how to use a hand drill. he needs to elaborate more on what he wants and/or is capable of, when youre on a budget you need to be able to do everything yourself. now if he said he had 4K to play with he could simply pay for a bolt on kit.
