what causes differentials to break????
Sup guys... my tranny broke 3 weeks ago and today we just took it apart and found out the teeths on the differential and shaft were broken. What could have cause this to happen? this is a d16y8 tranny.
I was at the track about to take off in first and something PoppED.

I think wheel hop is the biggest cause of failure in differentials - assuming your *NOT running 1,000 whp. Sometimes it can be very voilent!

Wheel hop is really bad because you are applying huge load reversals to the tranny along with huge torque peaks. Imaging dumping your clutch 5 times a second... how long would you expect it to live doing that?
I was also told lack of LSD can cause this as well. I saw a CRX with the same problem the other day. He had bad wheel hop and he laucned to high. Just a "S.W.A.G"..............Scientific wild *** guess

you guys need to hear my **** I broke my intermediate shaft off in the drivers side cv boot and that is solid steel and then I spun the passenger side axle around and bent the teeth all the way around the axle and I grinded up and flatened the teeth in my tranny I will show pics when I get these pics devolped and scan them. this all occured when I was n/a just a lil ol b16a... now Im boosted and last week I blew my tranny at the track but I got a ls tranny for my b16 untill I get my old tranny rebuilt and put lsd in that ****
ive also broken one id say buy a quaife and that will never break, also better performance, cuase i just wen out and bought another b16 trannie and i also broke the diff in that so i bought a quaife lsd on groupbuycenter.com for 850 shipped..
so if i buy a quaife how do i install it? yea when i took the tranny apart, most of the teeths on the differentials and shaft were broken off and flaten out. now i know what cause that. WHEEL HOP and alot of trq. is there any LSD for a sohc d16y8?
In short, Open differentials are not designed to operate spinning only one wheel for long periods of time.
If you did a nice burnout before your run, that's probably what signed it's death wish.

broke the teeth on stock diff too.....I think mine was due too pieces inside (clutch/hub and flywheel chunks broke off) that flew around everywhere.
