Default what causes differentials to break????

Sup guys... my tranny broke 3 weeks ago and today we just took it apart and found out the teeths on the differential and shaft were broken. What could have cause this to happen? this is a d16y8 tranny.

Too much torque... or old (or no) gear oil... or poor assembly...

broke the teeth on stock diff too.....I think mine was due too pieces inside (clutch/hub and flywheel chunks broke off) that flew around everywhere.

Wrong spline patterened clutch disks acting like an impact gun on the drivetrain can cause some issues, I've found.

Damn 90-91 b series trannies.

I think wheel hop is the biggest cause of failure in differentials - assuming your *NOT running 1,000 whp. Sometimes it can be very voilent!

Wheel hop is really bad because you are applying huge load reversals to the tranny along with huge torque peaks. Imaging dumping your clutch 5 times a second... how long would you expect it to live doing that?

I was also told lack of LSD can cause this as well. I saw a CRX with the same problem the other day. He had bad wheel hop and he laucned to high. Just a "S.W.A.G"..............Scientific wild *** guess

In short, Open differentials are not designed to operate spinning only one wheel for long periods of time.

If you did a nice burnout before your run, that's probably what signed it's death wish.
