The moates is slightly easier to use, but not by much.
Each one does the same thing, they burn chips.
The moates is a little more portable, but that isn't that important to most.

I remember I cringed when I first saw a pic of the Willem burner. I didn't like seeing the exposed board because it made it "look" fragile. Then later on I fond out that you had to stick jumper wiring into the burners sockets to burn AT29C256 chips. Even with all that though the Wilem can burn 27C256 chips and 29C256 chips, while the BURN1 can only burn 29C256 chips.
The difference between the 27C and 29C is that the 27C256 can only be burned to once. I think to erase it you have to use a UV light. A 29C256 chip can be burned and erased with the BURN1 equipment, I dont know if the Willem can do the same.
Also there is word that the 29C256 chips are being discontinued, so I dont know what that means for me if I decide to stick with my BURN1. I think it was just a marketing gig by Atmel to get more people to buy the chips, because when I heard about the discontinuation I bought 3 more 29C256 chips hehehe. So now I have a total of 5 29C256 chips.

Yes, it looks fragile, but I can attest to the durability of mine. I usually just toss it on the center arm rest when tuning and throw it in the center console when not in use. My dog jumped in my car and stepped directly on it (Pit Bull) and did no damage. I usually just store it in a ziplock back when not in use.

Re: (dennis)
thanks guys I'll do some more looking. If I decide to get the burn1 I'll def. stock up on chips. The prob is that I told DELL that I didn't want the floppy drive and the willems burner has the software on floppy. Does the burn1 use a floppy or is it with cd?

The burn1 software comes on a CD. Does your regular PC have a CDRW though? or is your laptop your regular PC? you might be able to copy the files you need t a CDRW so you can read it on your laptop.

This is all hype BS. I spoke directly with a sales rep at Atmel. Here's the email:
What I sent them:
Family : Flash Memory
Part_no : AT29C256
Name : Matthew D. Todhunter
Title :
Company : Georgia Institute of Technology
City :
Street :
State :
Country : USA
Postal_Code : 30273
Phone : 678*******
Fax :
Email : daxifus@gmail.com
Problem : Product availability
Details : A recent email from Digikey states that Atmel plans to
discontinue the AT29C256 Flash memory chip. Is this true?
What they sent me:
Matthew,
Atmel does not plan to discontinue AT29C256 device family.
You may be referring to a recent End-of-Life notice that only applies to
PDIP package offerings.
Please take a look at the datasheet which lists all available part number
options for this device (on page 14):
http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resou...6.pdf .
Regards,
Tatjana

Re: (DaX)
I will be using the home computer to do the burning. I'm moving monday and hopefully I can find my old laptop otherwise I won't be datalogging for a while. My home computer has a cd-r and dvd-r drive but no floppy.
I found out that the BURN1 from moetes comes with a cd so I'll prob go with that since I'm getting my uberdata kit from them.

Yah, the Moates CD comes with the drivers and really good instructions on how to use and install the burn1. Installingthe BURN1 was easier then installing any other piece of hardware for my PC. Another good thing about Moates is Craig Moates is a member on the Uberforums and he posts and listens to people. So you'll have really good technical support with the BURN1 and Ostrich, should you choose to get on in the future.

Yah, check out these other two threads to help you figure out which one to use for datalogging. I'm using my P28 which I just setup tonight for datalogging. All I had to do was solder in a Nokia cell phone datalogging cable (Radioshack model 3285/5185) to my ECU and I was able to use UD to datalog. Zeitronix also has software that allows you to use their program to datalog. Snail Tuning's posts can tell you how to do that.
Here are the two threads where we discussed the zt2 and datalogging. The second link has tips on how to hook it up and also how to set it up so you can easily move the WB setup to other peopls cars.
