BTW I've found MIG welding extremely easy. I already welded up some strut tower bars for practice and it came out pretty clean. I know that TIG makes better welds, but MIG can do it faster and cheaper. My next practice project will be exhaust stands to hold the exhaust in place when I weld it in. My biggest problem now is finding cheap scrap metal to practice with.

I always weld w/100% argon on straight wire coil. Argon here is only like $3 more to get 100% versus 75% so I always get 100

Dont buy metal from a store. Ask around and fine a metal supplier that sells straight from his own business... buy from them a few times and get to know em, shoot **** and you can get decent deals.

Now try aluminum w/100% and say its easy
Be sure to lube ur gun lines also... hehe

so you use 100% argon with stainless steele and regular mild steel?

and since you mentioned it, what do you use with aluminum?

Yeah I use 100% argon w/everything basically... same for aluminum.
Only thing different about aluminum is a typically use stress pills all day

Nah it aint that bad, just need to have a clean gun and a flow from the motor that you are comfortable with, because aluminum will melt as soon as it pops a spark. If you dont start it off the exact right way then it will just flash and melt in a line like steel does when you dont get a good flow. Just a lot faster and more annoying like a slap in the face

Oh and another thing, dont use stainless steel to make anything that is gonna endure heat over 1000F for an extended period of time. Like MANIFOLDS.

Get it coated with something that wont fracture the stability of the actual manifold. When you weld two solid pieces together using all stainless there are too many risks of it not matching perfectly. When it cools it will loose stability.

Go with mild steel, and find the best price on welding wire. They all match up 99% of the time.
