Default Wastegate Problem

I can't post in the forced induction section so I have to post here. I think I'm having trouble wastegate. Not really sure but is the wastegate supposed to be open constantly? Cause as far as I knew it's only supposed to open when the boost reachs or approachs a certain limit. Maybe I have it hooked up wrong. I have the side nipple connected to a vaccum source and the top is just left open to the atmosphere cause I dont have a boost controller yet. Here's a picture of my setup.. Also does the nipple thing have to be faceing a certain direction?

NO.

That is hooked up correctly. But what is that vacuum cluster you have it run to? Get it off of that vacuum line and put it either directly to the intake manifold, or even better hook it up directly to the port on the turbo's compressor side.

ONE BIG ISSUE: you have the wastegate facing your valve cover. that's a big no-no. You are going to melt the valve cover. Turn it around and PUT A DUMPTUBE ON IT PRONTO!!

I dont have a port for it on the compressor so i just hooked it into the vaccum lines i though that was ok... Thanks for the advice on flipping it around though I'm an idiot and would've let it melt the head.

it is OK to connect to vacuum lines, but I would put it MUCH MUCH closer to the intake manifold. T off your FPR vacuum line, not the cruise control setup.

edit: if you flip the wg but don't run a dumptube you still run the risk of melting ****. definitely flip it and then route a pipe down under the motor from the wg.

Ok thats do-able but is it supposed to be open constantly cause i thought that it only opened when the target boost was reached?

that's correct, it is not supposed to be open all the time.

There is. That is how a wastegate works. When the pressure on the other side of the diapghram overpowers the spring that pushes against it, the wastegate pops open.

I have a problem then cause mine is open as soon as i start the car and i have vaccum not even boost... any thoughts? maybe if i installed a boost controller it would solve the problem but I'm not sure how to install it... Can anybody confirm this is correct?

I doubt a boost controller is going to solve your problem.

are you sure there is a spring in the wastegate?

cause a bad vaccum source will cause the boost to spike and it would not be opening immediately like you see happening... hell it sometimes will not open at all if the vac. source is really bad (or when you completely blow off the line going to the wastegate).

Here is a drawing I found, to best show the breakdown of a wastegate...

And here is how to set up a Manual Boost Controller...

you really need to take your positive feed for the wastegate as close to the turbo compressor housing as possible. I wouldn't use a vacuum line connected to the inlet manifold. If you havn't got a port on the compressor housing, make one & take your positive feed from there
