Default Is a wastegate necessary?

My wastegate is built in on my turbo and bumps into the A/C control unit. It will probably fit without the A/C unit there, which I don't mind removing, but can I just remove the wastegate if I have a blowoff valve? Or do they both need to work in conjunction, not just one without the other? I'm new to turbos, so if this is a newb question, which I'm sure it is, then I apologize, but would still appreciate any answers.

plain and simple, you need a wastegate. remove the ac, you dont have any other choice if you cant get it to fit.

yup you definetly need a wastegate. a blow-off valve and a wastegate are two different things. a wastegate regulates boost and a blow-off valve releases boost that could be harmful to the turbo. HTH

you need the wastegate for sure.

I'll explain it for you a little better.

The turbo is turned by the exhaust, right? You knew that. Well, when that turbo is spinning as fast as they possibly can, (depending on the size of the turbo, etc) they can put out 25 psi, but the turbo won't last very long at those speeds. So, what the wastegate does, is when your turbo is at the point of putting out all the boost you told it to (8psi, 10psi, however much boost you want it to hold), the wastegate provides a bypass for those exhausts, so that they don't continue to spin the turbo.

Does that make sense? without the wastegate, your turbo would produce way too much boost for your engine.

The BOV lets off the positive manifold pressure when letting off the throttle. It lets off boost pressure that isn't going to be used.

BOV = intake side, wastegate = exhaust side.

You need them both.
