Walbro 255 Retaining Clip Issue
Hey guys,
I just had a chance this weekend to install my walbro and ran into a stupid problem. At the bottom of the actual pump, there is a small "nub" piece of plastic where the pump's filter is seated on and held in by a retainer clip. Well, as I was fitting the pump back into it's bracket, for some reason that "nub" of plastic just snapped. I'm not sure why it happened considering I wasn't putting pressure on it or installing it in any unusual manner. I was putting it in just as instructed and how you would install any fuel pump, but it still broke. Has this happened to anyone before, and did you have to buy a new pump because of it? I'm guessing I'll have to, but P_Adams suggested trying an epoxy if I wanted to try that first. Does anyone know of any epoxy that wouldn't be dissentegrated by gas? Maybe a dab of JB Weld? If you guys have any ideas for a solution let me know. Otherwise, I guess I'm going to have to spend some more money on another pump.

this same thing happened to me. i attached it as best i could then then sealed it with silicone or something similar. probably not the best idea but it ran that way for 2.5 years.

Thank god other people have had this problem. I thought I was going to be the only one to bring it up and get flamed for it haha. Dpetro, how long did you let the silicone set for the lil nub that snapped off? 24 hrs should be enough I assume...Also, do you know what kind you used? i just don't want it to disintegrate from gas. Bailhatch, do you happen to have a pic of how you did yours? Did you just run the wire in from the loop that is supposed to slide on the nub?
I noticed when I had it in the clamp after it broke, the filter felt sturdy as is...does anyone think it's supported enough as is? Like importdude said, I don't want it falling off in the tank. BTW, I called Walbro and the lady who was in charge of their intank pumps did not seem to like dealing with customers...

I have only installed about 100 Walboro pumps...never broke one doing it. So no I don't have pictures.
Dont use silicon.
The rubber U shaped thing should keep it on fine anyway. Just push the pump down as far as it will go.

where are you in ME? I may even be able to drive up. Would it be okay to weld on that? I wouldn't want to have people running around in a ball of fire lol

I just did this same thing a few months back, I am a lazy bastard so I pushed the sock back on and checked it, definately felt snug so I just put it back in the tank and went down the track, its still attached and has not fallen off yet.......

so no mods at all? I know mine felt snug so from the sounds of things, it should be fine. I may just leave it like this. If the sock ever falls off, i'll just order a new one.

A nice pernament fix would be to grind down the half broken stubby (or grind down so everthing is fully flat on the bottom. Use a small drill bit and drill a tiny hole, but not all the way through. Just give it enough depth on the hole so you can use a small sheet metal screw and screw the piece on.
No silicon, no mess, nothing hacked. I had to fix several pumps like that because I get to install a lot of "used parts" that customers had brought me over the years, and I have dealt with a lot of broken tabs on Walbro pumps.

I had thought about doing that, but someone said it ran the risk of grounding out the pump. How deep would you drill in? 1/8"?

honestly it felt pretty snug as others mentioned. i think i tossed some ultra grey/hondabond on it. probably not the best idea. i dunno if its petroleum proof so i guess i shouldnt suggest doing that

Any Ultrablack, ultra grey, Hondabond, etc.. cannot withstand gasoline.. I would never use any of that in the fuel tank or you will just end up having crap everywhere sinked at the bottom.
Drill the hole deep enough to get one or two threads of the screw in the pump, but do not drill all the way through.

Yes, I know it sounded dumb to ask, but I was talking to a shop and they said there might be a chance. It didn't make much sense to me either.

Thank god I saw this posting. I just broke the tab off my fuel pump and wondered if the filter was going to fall off in the tank. Mine felt snug as well so I put it in there like that, but if I have any problems down the road, I'll secure it with a sheet metal screw.
