Default Vitara piston slap

Here is like 2 seconds of my car idling. Sounds like a diesel but it's my D16y7 with vitara pistons.

Lol, that's nasty sounding. How was your cylinder when you put them in?

What causes them to sound like that?

Were the clearances not tight enough or something?

full floating pistons are noisy...the rod runs "loose" in the wrist pin not thight like in a pressed fit style piston.

Mines noisy also... 800miles and still nice clean oil and running fine.

Are other floating style pistons this noisy though?

Aren't most forged pistons floating style? Forged pistons aren't as loud as these are, at least not that I've heard.

I guess if the sound is normal it's not that big of a deal.

not big of a deal for me..running 12.4 je je
motor is still strong and with compression numbers perfectly even after 8-9 k miles running them.

i would think that if stock bore piston is used, theres the possiblity of piston to cylinder wall clearance being on the loose side.

Also of note.. my block was high mileage so had good amount of piston ring wear on the cylinders. Also.. machinist mentioned the pistons were "loose" ... but like I said... 800miles and everything looks perfect.

yeah thats what i was kind of worried about too on my soon to be Vitara build... but then i figured it dosn't really matter anyway b/c i'm not building it to last 80-100K miles, you know... Plus at 15-20psi im sure the pistons will warm right up and expand a lil, decreasing the noise.

my plan is to not actually hone my block when i assemble it, just scuff the crap out of them with steel wool.

hopefully that wont take too much material off of the walls.

yeah im going to measure mine and the block when my build comes up.. if they are gonna sound like that then **** it im not going to use them..

sounds like fjt should have told us they sounded like that when we got them.. i dont want my motor to sound like ***.

Mine are a little noisey, but once it warms up it goes away. I have 1200 miles on mine and still running strong.

Dude all that information is all over all the vitaras threads here and in other forums..I think its even mentioned on my build up thread and i have even answered about them being noisy(in my own motor) when aked.

Just to clear this up

Its called de-glazing the cylinder wall... if the wall is true... its all that is really needed.

WTF?

You need to hone the walls man... honing doesn't take much off the walls at all..

You will need a fresh hone to make sure the rings seat properly. I don't think steel wool will do the job.

agreed. deglazing is WHY you hone the cylinders... hence my "o-face" LOL

or you should have just done more research on your own. I think fjt has done a lot for the people on this board, and you're bitchen about a noisy engine.

So, the piston to wall clearance was a little out of spec?

Would it be better to get a little oversized pistons and bore the cylinder out a bit so the clearances are on target?

They make oversized vitara pistons right?

they come in 40 over which means going up to 76 mm..On the stock sleeves i wouldnt bore that much unless i keep it low boost...Or re sleeve

Oh, okay...

I'll just look for a block that has low miles or is in really good condition, that way I won't have to take much off the cylinder walls when I hone.

What about getting the side skirts coated? I would think that woud tighten the clearances up a bit. Has anyone tried that?
