Default Very Pleased with Portflow!!!

About 10 days ago I sent my head to portflow. He estimated that he would have the head finished and ready for shipping Feb 20 (friday). I called today to see how things were coming, and he said he was installing the rocker arms as we spoke, then it was getting packed and shipped today!

Kick ***

Then, he said that he would email me some pics, as well as the tracking number. Sure enough, he sent me both this evening. Here are the pics

combustion chamber work, and stainless valves

Portwork

close up, semi blurry pic of the bowl work and valves.

I have never, ever been treated like this by a company. Venders out there: This is how it SHOULD be done. Fair prices, always available as well as informative and courteous on the phone, and work was finished ahead of time. Tracking number provided without having to be asked for it, and pictures??!?!?!? Wow!!!

I won't hesitate ever again to send that company any work at all. I hear by add Tom @ Portflow to my good guy list

ain't it though

And since I know someone is going to ask, I had the following work done. This is for my 85mm GSR Turbo application:

Port/polish, open combustion chamber bore to 85mm
Purchase and install .5mm larger Ferrera valves
Portflow inner springs
New valve stem seals.

How much did I pay? That's not a nice question

valve stem seals = retainers?
If not did you get retainers?
Hope my head work looks like yours.

Nice looking head you got there!

Seriously. Looks good. Now hurry up and get everything assembled. I can't afford a kick-*** b20/vtec turbo set-up...so I have to live vicariously through you!

no no, valve stem seals seal the valve stem, and prevent oil from seeping down the valve stem and into your air charge and combustion chamber.

I am running Skunk2 retainers in combination with my Portflow inners and ITR/GSR outers. My goal is 350-375 streetable whp. I should easily exceed those numbers on race gas. I hope to have this up and running within a month or two. I've got a LOT of work ahead of me, both on my car as well as Marksaccord and a few other people. Gotta pay before I can play

Again, I can't stress this enough, this is a GREAT company. You cant make a bad choice with them.

I called up Tom and he asked me for some of the following information:

Aspiration
Bore size
Desired output
Cam shaft used
parts you already purchased for the head

He'll tell you what he thinks you need, and then quote you a price for the work he would do. Then you send him the cylinder head, with a detailed list of what you want done, and a cashier's check for the amount quoted. You know the rest from there.

The scary part is... the stuff actually works too! There is no other reason besides Tom's work on my head that I hit 197 at the wheels N/A in my setup. Drove great, made great power,

Actually, polishing the combustion chamber is one of the most basic forms of head work. It removes irregularities, which can cause hot spots (and thus detonation). Having this work done allows you to run more boost and timing, all other factors remaining the same. I also had the combustion chamber opened up to match the bore size, which will drop my compression ratio a little. CFM numbers are important, but they ain't everything. Anybody can make great CFM, just knock the floors out.

about polishing,i think its kinda of worthless,2 reasons,1 in the intake port, fuel atomizes better with without the polish 2 in the chamber and exhaust port, the polish looks all pretty and might make a diff as you claim above but once motor gets some street miles on it,carbon is gonna cover up that nice shiny polish anyway

anybody can open up an chamber or port, but if it was my head,i would want to know how many CCs he open chambers up too and if they are equal, and #s of his port job, whats it flow and if its equal port to port,if you dont know the numbers or whoever does the head, cant supply them, get somebody with a flow bench, and have em checked.

I spoke with Tom 2-3 times last week and he answered all of my questions and then some. Dropped of my head this morning and also received a tour of the facility and we "shot the ****" for another twenty minutes. Very, very nice guy and extremely professional . I HIGHLY reccomeng doing business w/ Portflow . Can`t wait to get my head back after seeing your pics, John!

Nobody polishes the intake ports. You can see in that picture the texture that's added to the intake port to increase turbulence.

Flow bench numbers don't mean much. Like VaporTrail said, there's many things you can do that increase flow and decrease power. I've seen a few hack port jobs done by machine shops with flow benches and it's not pretty.

My Point is,about using a Flow Bench,You can see if the guy grinded too much or in the wrong spot in one of the ports as compared to the others, all the ports should flow about the same and be well balanced.
