valve seals bad??? please help
noticed some fluid below my ex manifold and assumed it was cam seals or valve cover gasket......took off ex mani and found this

thinking valve seals are bad or whats going on is this normal and i should keep looking for my leak, cuz i recently changed headgasket and reused valve cover and inner cam seals and all the oil seems to be on the drivers side of the motor

no see i havent really driven the car since i put the head gasket back on and i didnt smoke before and definitly not at idle.....i just left it idleing and saw evidence of oil running down the front of the block under the right cylinder

Sounds like a pretty bad leak. The valve seals are pretty easy to replace and aren't very expensive.

also curious on possible worn valve seals. is there any way to see if the intake valves are leaking? since combustion is on it's way out, it makes it easier to see on the exhaust i presume.

Does your car smoke when you decelerate and then get back on the gas?</TD></TR></TABLE>
i hold a steady 195 on all for cylinders for compression test. i still use oil though, and my exhaust ports are dry. i don't have a leakdown tester yet, or i'd do that. if it's intake valves, smoke on acceleration would be a good sign right? this is on a b18a btw. what's the proper tool to do this with head still on block?
thanx.

You can usually tell if it's the intake valve seals if you decelerate in gear, then get back on the gas and it smokes. When you are decelerating the engine is pulling more than normal vacuum and it can suck some oil past the seals, then when you get back on the gas that oil has to burn off.
My car did this for a while, it wouldn't smoke at idle or any other time, only if I decelerated and got back on the gas. My compression was perfect as well.
The valve seals aren't that hard to replace. There are some tutorials on here that you can probably find through searching. You can replace them with the head still on the car too!

so your issue was seals as well? thanx for the help.

I'm battling the same issue...decelerate down a hill in gear. come to a stop, and the car puffs out a cloud of smoke. No blowby b/c the catch can is empty.
My exaust valve seals we easy to diagnose, I just looked in the port at the valve stem. It was pretty obvious:

Smoke after deceleration can also be an indication of poor ring seal, the vacuum sucks oil up past the rings on deceleration. I've had a couple of motors with that problem after I trashed the rings.
