Default vafc hack screwing with my timing?

I'm running the v-afc hack on my b17 turbo. When I have the base timing set to stock the car hesitates a little between 3500-4500rpm I know this is common when running the hack. I wanted a little magin for safety so I set it back about 3-4 degrees and now it's hesitating at everything between 2500-5500rpm. I'm only running 8psi on 9.7:1 compression so I'm thinking running the stock timing should be o.k. but I've blown motors in the past so I'm a little hesitant to push my luck. If anyone can tell me if they have had reliabiltiy issues with the factory timing settings or what they run for timing I would appreciate it.

My GSR does the same thing on the hack, though it's more weather dependent than anything, and I run with 2 dergees of retard.
