Default update on my engine teardown

finally got my engine completely torn down. First time for me! anyway, as expected, blown ringlands (both of them) on my 1 and 4 pistons. cylinders look perfect. got JE 9:1 0.20 over pistons to go in along with Eagle rods and ARP headstuds. Machinist gets the block next week!
Now I wish I had the funds and the time to sleeve the thing. Oh well, 1 Bar will have to suffice.

don't have a digi cam right now. basically there are cracks splitting the ringlands in two!

is that the part between the rings or the top of the piston and the ring.

its the part between the rings, on one piston it broke there and on the lands between the oil seal and the lower ring!

hmmm. well I gutted my cat and ran a test pipe through it. My boost controller was set for a particular duty cycle and bam, I boosted past my set point and my hondata maps were not set to go that high. I didn't notice anything bad happen just that i had white smoke out my breather. guess I must have detonated or the stock ringlands could not take 12 psi? I wonder how far I can push the stock sleeves with forged internal?? I think i'm gonna be a bit careful at least till I have the time and money to start work on an all out sleeved/built engine

12psi on 10:1 compression w/ pump gas is asking for trouble anyways

Probably hurt the ring lands by running it way too lean. Thats where it shows up first. You can't tell you're doing it while it's happening. It sucks but part of the game. Cyinders can look unhurt but they may be balooned out of round.

don't think i was running lean up to about 11.5 psi. a:f was about 12:1 to there. after that, dont know what happened. i normally didnt' run over 10.5psi. anyway, new pistons will be going in after boring block to 81.5. I hope the cylinders check out ok!

Hey man, you know Hondata has a boost cut feature that can save your *** from that right? Of all the Hondata boosted cars that I've tuned, which currently that number is about 12, only one has blown - the one that requested I not put in a boost cut. Take a guess as to what happened....

John, I had that set to 11.2 psi. Doug said if it were to cut I would know it and that the MAP/Hondata read lower than most boost gauges. So I probably didn't cut with the Hondata. I really don't know what happened. Besides, hondata cuts fuel at that point which can lead to lean...detonation?

the same thing happened to me back in november. cracked ringlands in #1 and #4. except mine was greddy and i think it was the fault of the blue box. what sucked for me is that my cylinders were quite scored up. well, it doens't totally suck because my block is on the way back from GE, should be here friday. but it sucks how long my car has been down for.

anyway, i think i'l be back ina ction in a month or so, ny the time i get everything else squared away.

good luck!

no fuel = no combustion right?

its actually a pretty harsch boost cut, it's not like hitting the rev limiter, where you'd sit there and bounce off of it.

It is not a good idea to cut fuel!, maybe the ignition, but definately not the fuel. No fuel leads to makes a lean situation even worse.
