Default Turbo w/ supercharger

I am SURE this has been discused before. I tried searching but doing a search, but having 'turbo' in the subject turns up quite a few results.

I currently have a JRSC.
Why couldnt i just a a turbo to the whole setup? Have the blower run at lower RPM then with a RPM activated switch close the bypass valve at the RPM that the big *** turbo begins making boost and the S/C is toping out.
The best of both worlds? Or am i a confused man that needs sleep bAd

This is probley not practlical for honda's, but I am rather curious...

...Crap, wheres my flame suit

yea i read about that car....wat i got from it was a nicely tuned and well designed turbo or supercharger system would would a lo tbetter..be cheaper...make mor epower....more reliable...blah blah blah u get hte idea....but **** go for it if u want...ill be very impressed if u do it
there was an mr2 in the past sport compact car ultimate street car challenge that was turbo and supercharged....didnt seem to work too well either

I think you would gain some low end, but the top end would be severly limited, because the SC would still be pumping in nice HOT air, as opposed to an intercooled turbo.

The only company I know of to ever legitimately pull this off (in other words make it worth the trouble) was Lancia with their S4 Group B rally car in the mid eighties. It did 0-60 in 2.3 seconds... on gravel.

If you want to do it right you would need a clutch on the supercharger drive so that after a certain RPM the supercharger gets turned off. That way you won't have it leeching off of your horsepower at high RPM. You would also need some kind of valve that switches the engines air source from super to turbo at a certain boost level or rpm or whatever.

The JRSC has that valve built into it (bypass Valve).
How much drag on the engine would it really put when it was in bypass mode? since its not forcing air into the engine wouldnt it just spin free?

...Or become a considerable restriction to airflow from the turbocharger.

The supercharger loss can be estimated as about the same as the losses due to the a/c, which is on the order of 10 to 20%.

You could use an a/c clutched pulley on the supercharger, but how much work would that entail?

I have some vids of some guy with a sohc del sol that did this (added a clutch supercharger a la Mad Max) with a g60 supercharger. He pushes the a/c button and viola, boost. He had a bypass valve, and two large K&N airfilters, I think.

I'm not sure if the JR valve would work correctly with boost on both sides of it. I'm guessing it wouldn't work. And you have to remember that at high RPM a supercharger is beating on the air pretty hard. That is what heats it up. It doesn't matter if you've got the thing freespinning or not. So not only do you have the restriction, you also have heat added.

'You can do it!' but it wont be easy.

Why not used a properly tuned turbo setup with a small shot of nitrous for the low end?

Much more practical.

Or Viceversa

Those with JRSC do love to get a small shot of nitrous and get better results than instead of fuggin around with that useless water injection.

Someone should make something like vortech/turbo.

Where a belt and exhaust gases drive the turbo. At low RPM the belt drives it, then when exhaust gases increase, have a clutch that engauges and disenguages the belt, so the turbo it only driven off exhaust gases at certain RPMs.

i remember radin about somethin somewhat similar in SCC a few years back...i believe it was Garrett that was workign on it.....it was called the hydracharger...it basically used hydrlic pressure to spin the turbine at low rpms so there wasn't any lag and then the exhaust gases spun the turbine once there was enough to create boost..so with that you could in effect have a ratehr large turbo for huge horsepower figures, but without the problem of lots of lag...anyone else knwo more abotu the hydracharger? or at least remember the article a little better?
