Default Turbo Selection for Fast Spool

I have a B20Z that I want to boost. I'm looking at 2 different turbo's. One is a big 16g (.58 hot) and the other is a T3 (.48 hot, .60 cold). The downpipe for the 16g would be 2.5 inch and the T3 would have a vband 3 inch dp. Both would have a 3 inch exhaust after that.

Question is, which would be the better choice for 230whp? I'm looking for almost supercharger style spool but I don't want it to choke up top. Only revving to 6800-7000.

the T3 has no trim or wheel information so we can give you a proper analysis between the two turbos. Housing size doesnt mean anything without wheel sizes. 230whp is easily attainable with the 16g, seeing that you have lower rev engine you should be able to end up with supercharger like midrange with a smaller turbo and not have to worry about it choking off up top as the non-vtec's dont really make a **** ton of power up top anyhow in stock formation

16G might even be too big for 230hp. You could probably run the 14B/G. Thoughts?

CXRacing is an ebay vendor. You know its a **** turbo when they dont even list wheel sizes under specs. Their 16G is a knock off as well. Ive witnessed a knockoff 16G compressor wheel self destruct in 11 miles.

Do NOT get a damn Chinese turbo. People if you can't afford to turbo your car the right way then DON'T. After you spend money on the equipment here is a lot more up keep than NA.

Personally, I'm a fan of Mitsu turbo's. I've been looking on a DSM forum and I've found that the 14b can support up to 300hp, but I'm worried that a 2 liter engine would be too big for it. I used to have a 14b on my Civic with a D16Z6 and it worked great. Like I said originally though, I'm looking for crazy fast spool time. For example, I can cruise on the highway out of boost at 3k rpm, but if I floor it, even in 5th gear, I'll get near full spool if not full spool.

I think I'm gonna go with a small 16g... Based on compressor maps and what not, it seems like it'd be the best choice for my currant goal plus it leaves me with room to grow. Now the problem is finding a legit mitsu one... Anyone know where I can get one? I've no problem with getting one that needs rebuilt. Wouldn't be the first time I've done it.

A 14b and small 16g will have almost the same spool time, but the 16g will support a bit more power and should hold boost to 7200 rpm better than a 14b.

However a 14b will easily do 230 whp as well.

Where can you find one? Ebay, or a dsm forum. If you get one that needs rebuilt, you know they should be balanced after a rebuild right?

Have you already planned a manifold that will bolt up to a dsm turbo?

Mitsu turbos are great but those "new" ones on ebay are knock offs. Save some money and get a used mitsu turbo from a DSM or Evo forum and get it rebuilt if you want. Id trusted used OEM over new eBay **** anyday.

Even the DSM Forums have confirmed to using the eBay units. Mitsu cartridges went up in price by over 300% in the last 18 months, and because of lack of availability, genuine MHI Cartridges are hard to come by. So, he's kind of screwed either way.

Why make things complicated? Get a T3 Super 60 on a cast log manifold and call it a day...

first the information you stated on the t3 turbo gives us no information about the turbo. A turbos power potential is based on the max amount of air(Pounds per min)it can flow. The bigger the turbo the more air it can flow. Size is determined by the size in milimeaters of the compressor and turbine wheel. t3 turbos is just the type of flange on the turbine housing. Some t3 turbos such as a gt28r can support 300hp and other t3 turbos such as a hta gt3586r or precision 6466 can support 800+whp

second do not use a cheep knock off chines turbo

only use real garrett turbos

If money is not an option for your power goals get a garrett gtx28r. some thing cheaper would be a gt28r. And the cheapest nre turbo option would be a normal non ball bearing garrett T series turbo sucj as a garrett t3 50 trim or a t3 super 60. These turbos can be had for about $700 new

Only if the solenoid can keep up. Its basically a new "gain" feature that GReddy, HKS EVC, and Apex'i boost controllers have had for over 15 years. Its about time they got up to date with that. One of the main reasons why I never used Hondata after 2004.

What about this...

Intake :3 inch
Outlet: 2 inch
Compressor trim: .50 ar
Compressor Wheel diameter: 66.72 /84.25 (big wheel)
Turbine wheel diameter : 43.46 /59.20
Exhaust trim: .48ar
Turbine flange type: t3 flange
Downpipe flange type : 2.5" v band

Or maybe this...

Intake: 3 inch
Inlet: 2 inch
Compressor trim: .50ar
Compressor Wheel diameter: 53.00 / 76.50
Turbine Wheel diameter: 48.00 / 64.50
Exhaust Trim: .58ar
Turbine flange type : T3 flange
Down pipe flange type: 2.5 inch v-band
Cooling type: oil & water cooled

^^ your second choice here seems to make more sense. though the exducer is a little larger it may be. Based upon those figures, you're a 48 trim, though I suspect from the raw information its closer to what is considered to be a "50 trim", using similar to a stage 3 wheel. that's good to about 400whp or so, and does quite well for the B20, though you may be a little limited because of the cylinder head. But it will work.

A few months ago I only paid 150 shipped for my Evo 8 16g but I'm a ninja like that.

You'll be damned to find a new genuine mhi cartridge, as TheShodan said, they've gotten so expensive I haven't even seen new genuine units in forever.

Best bet are DSM/evo forums but as already stated they've been known to use eBay units a lot.., a dead giveaway is if the compressor housing says big 16g or anything id'ing the the turbo with a serial number of some sort.

When in doubt use god speed or Emusa lol 10-15psi by 3400 and power for 250-300whp.

But will it work? Lol
