Icon2 Turbo Replacement Advice

Boosted d17a2 on an ebay turbo 57 trim 5 pounds of boost

Now I have everything running right, I'm going to build the head and get a new turbo. I want the turbo to pretty much be a direct replacement... 5 bolt exhaust and t3/t4 exhaust manifold flange. What turbo should I get? Money doesnt matter, if the turbos worth it i will save. And the quicker it spools the better... my off brand takes forever to spool and it sucks. Thanks guys!

Well...
Lag is good because you dont want the turbo to choke out on top. I just want you to understand that, sometimes your tune can determine how your turbo acts. Unfortunately you can't get an exact spec size from brand to brand, it's like saying Sara Lee bread is the same as natures own. You can get the same "size" Garrett turbo but I recommend a retune because the Garrett will (most likey) produce power in a different area compared to the no name turbo you have been using.

The turbo is not the problem..... Its ur engine. That motor is not suitable for that type of application. If ur engine is taking forever to spool a 57 trim ebay turbo at 5psi, I suggest u take another look on keeping that engine turbo'd.

My 2 cents

^^

you do make a valid point there sir. 5lbs isnt much to spool up on that turbo. i have the garrett version on my gsr and i can achieve 5lbs almost instantly at any given time

Which means a massive exhaust leak or boost leak

Or you don't really know what turbo you have

I don't like to run large turbos on sohc cars, especially street cars, gt2860r is perfect

Nahhh its the nature of that engine. The head is totally garbage even throwing tons of $$$ at it. TB/IM is crap... some wierd plastic intake manifold with some drastic curves in it and the throttle is small as a quarter. Pistons are like a -6 dome also. Exhaust ports round and small quarter-like openings. We've done some testing on em for the hell of it and its depressing.

We got about 160whp at 5psi and only like 1500rpms for powerband seeing "full boost" (LOL) at almost 5000rpms and redline at around 6800-7000... 210whp at 10psi...at 14psi it did 233 and a rod saluted the outside world. All this on a "57" trim .50 .63 ebay POS.

Then the tranny is another POS not helping boost. Gears are far apart and fall out of boost every gear........

Nothing else to say.............

So Just get the Garrett turbo of this knock off? There's no leaking anyway. I think it's just a cheap turbo. And the motor's fine. So the gt2860r?

I just want you to understand how ignorant that comment really was. Lag is NEVER a good thing. It is all about what the car was designed for. If it was maximum horsepower, then lag will most likely be present due to turbo size to achieve this. That is the trade off. Maybe he WANTS bottom end power and is willing to choke up the top end. That is just WAY too generic of a statement to throw around when giving advice.

OP - If this is the case, go and purchase the smallest turbo you can find that fits in your current turbine housing requirement and there you go. Your car will always be a turd.
