Default turbo newbie - cheap setup

Well I have been contimplating trying to piece together a cheap turbo kit for my stock D16 in my 99 hatch. Thusfar I have spent most, if not all, of my money on my suspension and i feel my car is now ready, and more than capapble of handling some more power. I plan on doing a swap in the up coming future (6 months- 1yr), but I need some more power befor that.

As I was talking to my friend this weekend about his MR2 that he just got his JDm swap dropped in I realized that he has 2 decent MR2 turbo motors just sitting in his garage. each has there problems, one came out of a car he flipped in the rain but should actually be in pretty good shape, and the other motor just came out of his car and something internally is definetly blown. But both turbo's should still be good. I believe they are GT25's, but I am not to sure about that.

My questions are, minus the cost of the turbo how much am I lookin at spending to piece together a whole kit (hardwear), and the big question what am I going to need as far as tuning, fuel management, Eng management...

I am not asking for an exact price quote, just maybe a reference as to how much you spent on a similar setup. or maybe a small list of things I am going to need and an estimated price..

mani-
down pipe-
intercooler+piping-
BOV-
waste gate-

ect....

As I stated when it comes to boost, I am still a noob so please be gentle and try not to flame to much.

P.S. is the GT25 a decent turbo for my single cam, and is it a commonly used turbo? Will it be hard to find a mani or downpipe with the right flanges?

well hum,
honestly your D16 is it the y8?
If it is a gt25 thoes **** are expensive. Before i even start getting the turbo kit together pick the turbo first. If you want to see if you can use the gt25 send it in to test it & make sure it's not blown or what not.

Personally if your looking for a cheap easy turbo setup i would reccomend going the dsm t25 or dsm 14b turbo mated to a civic std exhaust manifold with adapter plate. Fuel managment, (because this is a cheap setup) I would go with either fmu or afc hack to make it simple.

i think you could get a clean, decent turbo kit make for less than $800.

I believe it is the D16y7, 99DX motor...

the only reason I want to use that turbo is because I can get it really cheap if not free. but I am not sure how well suited that turbo is for my application?

It stands for fuel management unit. It raises fuel pressure(8 to 12psi) per pound of boost. They are decent set-ups for low boost applications. ****, I've seen fmu/safc hacks turn over 300whp safely. I wouldn't do it but I've seen it done many times. Here's also something to think about. Since you said you're going to get a motor swap, I would definitely buy quality turbo parts for this motor because you will eventually sell that stuff and it will be hard selling low quality stuff, just my opinion. Good luck

alright, thanx.

That might be what i am lookin for since I am not lookin to run alot of boost. I am not planning on doing any internal work and am just lookin for something to slap on, tune, and run reliably for about 6-8 months. how much does an FMU go for?

any comments on your personal setups and the parts you used would be a good help. I can research and learn some stuff while doing it, I just really don't know where to start. So any advice on specific parts would be helpfull.

Remember cheap and reliable, not lookin for big numbers here just a little extra "boost".

alright update, the turbo in question that I have is a Toyota CT-26 not a GT-25. It appears to be a smaller sized turbo which is all I need. It did come stock on is 2.0L motor and did a good job, so I am just questioning wheather this particular turbo would be a good choice for a semi low boost single cam application?

Stock block, stock head. lookin to boost 6-8 pounds

OEM 1993 MR2 turbo- Toyota CT-26 turbine

so far ive spent 785 for,

14b turbo, excellent condition no shaft play
ic piping, most of it anyway need a couple small pieces
dsm side mount intercooler
Downpipe
Hf Manifold w/ adapter plate, already mated to turbo
Greddy Type S bov
oil feed and return lines and fittings
uberdata chipping stuff
burner to burn chips for uberdata

soon to come,
boost and a/f gauge 70$ from a guy i know here
Dsm 450cc injectors hopefully about 50$
Bov flange, 20$
miscallenious (sp) 25$

Total, turbo for 950 not to bad i dont think, daily driving at about 8psi w/ good fuel manegment, should be fun

dont think the guy wasnt to smart sellin it to me, the turbo had just "had a rebuild" supposedly 500 miles before it was pulled off the car, i was like sure whatever cuz i didnt think it was true but even for that price if I have to put a lil money into the turbo i still come out good, but nope perfect cond. shaft wont move in any directoin no matter how hard i try, the oil seals are still to be seen tho, hopefully there good to
