Default Turbo mani, driver side cold? or hot?

I was lookin around the net for a turbo mani, i've come across one confusing thing. Why is there a difference what side the turbo manifold puts the compressor??
I've seen turbo mani ads saying that it puts the compressor on the driver side, and some say the passy side. Is there something I'm missing? The turbo has a 4 bolt flange, rectangular...so you could flip the turbo 180 degrees and it'd still mount fine. am i missing something? isnt it turbo dependent?

cause the manifolds dont weld the flange flush with the block. if its made for compressor on passenger side, the flange is angled to make the compressor stick out a little. and most of the time, compressor on passenger side is a/c compatible whereas compressor on driver side is more than likely non a/c.

thanks, i understand the ac compatibility deal, but angled? I've got some clearance after puttin on a civic radiator, not sure that making the compressor or turbine stick out a little would make any difference.
