Default turbo and front-mount intercooler install...??...

i'm gonna be installing my turbo kit within a week or so on my 98 civic ex (d16 y8/9)...i'm gonna be having a front mount...so i was wondering...

what is the best way to get rid of the factory grill on the bumper's mouth?

should i just take a dremmel to it and sand?

also...i was wondering about VTEC and ignition timing...everyone's been tellin' me that i hafto retard the timing for sure with a turbo setup...but the opinions been goin' both ways when it comes to the VTEC...i'll be running around 7lbs tops (ill be running on stock internals so i dun wanna blow anything up)...with this amount of boost...should i disengage VTEC?...if yeah, can i do that without a V-AFC?...or will i be alrite?

and another thing...about controlling my boost...the turbo is a completely rebuilt mitsubishi 14a (i believe it came off the old mitsubishi starion)...the turbine has an internal wastegate limited to like 14lbs or so...will i be alrite controlling my boost thru the blow off valve? i kno that this like almost "leaking boost thru a hole in the intake" and all...but yeah...can anyone suggest a better way to control boost without having to invest tons of money...or will i be alrite with such low boost?

thanx!!

YOur BOV doesnt control the boost at all. It vents the boost so that it doesnt go back in to your turbo causing compressor surge (very bad for turbo life)

Dont disengage VTEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

about retarding your timing. If you wanted to be safe you could retard your timing to be a little safe.

Dont skimp out of your fuel management, youll regret it later

ugh...the BOV i have...has these threads...to tighten and loosen so i can control boost...

like if i have it set at 7lbs...when 7lbs of boost is reached...it'll open up and release the excess cuz the turbo is actually compressing out more....

Haha, that wouldn't work too well, anyway, yea the wastegate controls boost, you did buy one of those right?

Your timing will have to be retarded a little but not much as was said above. Do not take out your vtec as was also said above. That turbo will be begging for VTEC to open those valves up to let in all that air. You will be very unhappy without VTEC. VTEC doesn't open up until my car is warm. I can definately tell a huge difference. Plus it shouldnt do anything bad to your engine at 7 lbs. As long as the rest of the set up is good. As far as the waste gate being set for 14 pounds .... if your turbo piping is as big as the mitsubishi piping is you might ... MIGHT be ok. Those dont move much volume of air. Your blow off valve opens when the air has no where else to go due to the butterfly closing on the throttle body. It wont just blow off unless its set very wrong and that isnt at all reliable enough to set for controling boost. If I were you I would spend the money for a good wastegate though. You can spend it on the wastegate or you can spend 5 times that on the bottom end when it cracks a sleeve or takes out a rod or piston ring landing. Have fun though. You only live once and your motor is rebuildable Its only money right?
