Default Turbo Experts Please help me identify my Banks turbo

I'm trying to figure out what turbo I have. I got it for next to nothing with a manifold for my SBC nova. It also came with a BOV and waste gate plus some gauges. I'm trying to identify what turbo it is so I can order a rebuild kit for it. It has some pretty good shaft play. I believe it came off of a 6.2L chevy Banks sidewinder turbo kit. The guy I got it from said he ran it on his Camaro but had no other info for me. I know I should have done some more research on this but I couldn't pass up the deal. I tried to contact Banks but they never got back to me. I have a 5.7 350 Motor in my Nova. Hopefully I gave you guys enough info.

Banks Turbo

Part# 24004
Model# 116198H3

Looks like a P-trim wheel in the back of a tangiential turbine housing. Can't tell on the compressor wheel, though.. time to get the cover off and start measuring.

Well. in cases like that, Banks will more than likely NOT provide you with a "rebuild" kit. BUT, from what I remember, Banks was still a Honeywell Turbo Technologies specialty distributor; meaning that they use Garrett turbochargers. You'll either need to A) narrow your search down to what specific thrust bearing plate and bushing sizes you'll need for a comparable Garrett turbocharger of similar turbine wheel / cartridge combination, or B) Do the smart thing and send it in to a certified authorized Garrett rebuilder for them to do the work for you.

With these tough economic times, its understandable that you want (and are probably capable of) doing your own rebuild of the turbocharger. However, with parts availability at at an all time low to the lower tier vendors and distributors, chances are you may actually have to bite the bullet, send your turbo in for proper inspection and rebuild. Look at it this way; an authorized rebuilder may be able to see some other issues with the turbo that you weren't initially aware of.

Hope this helps.

Well thanks for the info, I main reason i was hoping to rebuild this turbo was so i could make some quick cash. I randomly came across this turbo on craigslist for free well trade for some bs parts. and it almost perfect con. fully cleaned inside and out. I was hoping to give myself cheap insurance buy rebuilding it.

You still can, but you'll need to invest in it. Not to mention, "flipping" turbochargers is almost a No-win scenario unless you have the tools, equipment, and almost the resources to turn water into wine. Even then its difficult to get a good turnaround. Only the ridiculously cheap T3/T4s or rare models get what someone put into it.

So napa auto in my town which is friends of mine, said we could peice together the parts necessary parts for my turbo, they're doing this pro-bono. And for the turbo being free it can't hurt me any. Plus I'm a have full use to a Cnc mill and lathe in case I had to make some random bearing. Thanks to all for this info. My turbo dose look exactly like the one in the picture. Ruffly what size is the turbo t4/t4 or t4/t5 etc?
