Default turbo driveability

How is it just driving around town in a honda/acura with a turbo? People in my area keep talling me that the only way it will run good is at WOT because you have to run your fuel mixture so rich. Is this ture?

Simple answer - no that's not true. Drivability off boost is almost exactly like it is without the turbo.

If you don't drive under boost, then it's as if your car is naturally aspirated. The same can almost be said of the MPG too...I get close to what I use to get before the turbo when I drive out of boost but when I'm under boost, the gas gauge starts to plummet! As long as you get a good turbo; good install and maintain it properly, it can be VERY driveable.

do you mean drive with the boost set very low, or shift before the turbo spools up?

it is very easy to drive the car without boosting. I think I have only been in boost once int he past two days(rain ) If you have never been in a turbo honda before i suggest you do so. It will answer your questions about how it drives.

Here's the deal with turbos... boost ONLY comes if you put your foot down. You can shift at redline and never see boost if you're light on the throttle.

as long as you get your fuel correct it drives just like it did without the turbo in vacuum. But its as soon as you step on the gas and boost increases that the car screams forward with both front tires clawing at the pavement for traction!!

I was running 12-14psi around town with no problems...and when i needed to pass somebody it just happens really fast. I still get my normal ~300 miles on a tank of gas.

Ya you could drive around for years w/o even boosting it would be no fun but its possible. I usually start building boost at over 50% throttle to give you an idea.

Can someone please explain to me why that is? To me it seems that nomater if it takes you 1 min. to get to 6000 rmp's, or 2 seconds, the same amount of exhaust would be coming out of the engine and throught the turbo, so the turbo would be spooling?

If you're giving it little gas, little exhaust will come out to drive the turbo, even at high rpm's. Consider redlining the engine, and letting off the gas altogether. There will be very little exhaust to drive the turbo then, and you won't be spooling. Hell, you can theoretically redline the engine, with the engine off.
