turbo d16 breaking up problems
okay. So i just got tune the other day. we only could bring the boost up to 9.5 psi because i had a bad alternator and the car was miss firing at about 6,800 rpm's. So he set me rich, told me to change the alternator. Now one problem i know of is that we have the alternator all the way to the firewall and yet the timing is still retarded a bit. i am assuming when they milled the motor it is causing this. (solution- adjustable cam gear or make the slits on the alternator bigger so i can move it back more). So i came home, put a new alternator in, and cranked the boost to 15psi wit a manual boost controller and it still seems to be breaking up. So i put my 15psi spring in the wastegate and now is breaks up at a even lower rpm. I don't know what the [freak] to do anymore. i'm getting really mad because i have had problems like this last year to and i finally saved and got retuned and still. P.s car is built and has all correct fuel supplies to handle this power.

u prob mean the distributor.. and messing with the timing without knowing where to put it can blow that motor easy. tuner should know what to do . .

i am sure your problem lies in the fact you think your alternator controls your timing.
if you are having ignition break up, i would suggest replacing the plugs, wires, and dizzy cap. also make sure your dizzy has the electro shielding still inside
and set your timing with a timing light and your service jumper jumped.

Re: (welfarepc)
No one ever said that the alternator controls timing. But when your alternator is not putting the proper voltage out than this creates a problem. Problem being that the car may not be getting the right amount of power to the ignition. and ignition and spark is something that you the right amount of. The plugs i have used in the car last year and are the plugs i was told to use by the tuner. i never gap them because they come pre gapped but i did notice he lowered the gap at the dyno.

i think you need to figure out what the [freak] youre talking about before trying to get help because people who are actually knowledgeable will go onto the next thread when you say the alternator affects timing.

I would try those suggestions. When my car was breaking up it turned out to be the plug gap was too wide and then I was too rich in the higher rpms.
