Turbo Came in the mail... What's the deal?
Guys, Matt here again; 95 civic EX. I have a question!~
I just came home from school and am seeing my turbo that came in the mail yesterday for the first time. I'm all ready to get my project on the road, but here's the deal. The exhaust flange lines up perfect with my manifold, but this turbo looks SMALL! I mean SMALL. What's the deal? The OUTLET has a 2" OD, and in inlet has a 2 1/8" inlet. The entire charger is less that 6" across. I'm going to try and figure out how to post a pic. INSIDE of the cold side outlet it is stamped with the number 42. It is a Garrett AiResearch turbo, and I can't find the A/R Anywhere. the only other useful / readable stamps are M27, and near the pressure outlet tap (for the wastegate) it is stamped with the number 68. It's not 63, I'm sure. It's 68. What does all this mean? Is this TINY for a turbo? I mean in all honesty, how can somthing less than 6" wide with a 1.5" outlet (2" OD) supply all the air my engine needs? Is this NOT a T3? It's supposed to be a t3 off a saab, early nineties. But seriously, it's microscopic. All responses appreciated!

yeah, yours is 2/3 the size of the manifold, according to my on screen measurements. Mine measures 1/2 manifold size. Is your's a t3 or a t3/t4? i'm not going to be able to respond after this post. I can't figure out how to make my user not be a 'trial user' and how to stop my 5 post a day limit...

A T3 is a pretty small turbo, most people are used to seeing a T3/T4 with the much larger compressor housing.
I know Saab use low boost applications on most of there cars so a straight T3 is quite likely.

Yup.. that is a saab turbo alright, older gen.. comp 42 and turbine 48.. it's a garrete.. I have one right here but upgraded the compressor to a 60 ar (found it in a junkyard for $10.. the 42 ar are very small.. what engine are you going to use this??

That is no Saab turbo. What saab turbo came with a 4 bolt turbine flange. None. A .68 or .69 turbine housing is an intresting find also. Doesn't look like any oem turbo to me...

It's a small turbo, but for your application, it will make decent power and allow you to upgrade later.
Saabs did come with a Garrett AirResearch turbo. I've pulled a few myself.
The specs on most Volvo and Saab turbos are:
.48 or .63 a/r turbine housing (.48 is the most common)
Stage 1 turbine wheel
Oil cooled center section (some are oil/water)
.42 a/r compressor housing
50 trim compressor wheel
I've seen a few 45 trim wheels, but they are almost all 50 trim wheels.
IMO, that is a great starter turbo for a D or non-VTEC B series engine. It will make decent power without blowing your engine to bits if you make a mistake. Sure, it's not gonna roast the tires in every gear, but I think it allows more room for error than say a T3/T04E or a T3/60-1.
IMO, too many people bite off more than they can chew when they start out. A T3/T04E is good for a well planned system and for someone who has experience
with a turbocharger system. For the first timer boosting on stock internals without engine management, a smaller T3 or a T25 is a good choice.

those factory turbo from saab, volvo, volks....are tiny, so my best bet your turbo is a real t3 w/ smaller trim size. i think it's more suitable for your sohc motor.

I hear you guys, And it all sounds like good advice. I know I'm not going drag racing every day, and i figured this T3 would be good. I just didn't realize somthing THIS small could supply enough air for my engine. I mean, the aftermarket NA intake I have on my car is 3". The outlet on the turbo is 1.5". I'm just shocked that somthing this small can flow enough air to support (never mind boost) my engine. What size charge piping to I use? I mean, 2" sounds good to me considering the size of the turbo!

Looking at the pictures that turbo looks to be an 8v spec turbo but doesn't look like the average early model Saab turbo. That turbo has a water jacket. Saab 900 did not come with a water jacket. Don’t think the 9000 did either. Id say it’s defiantly a .48 a/r turbine standard wheel looking at it. To verify the compressor wheel. Measure the inducer diameter, looks to be about 1.5 inches (from you pic with the ruler) than divide it by 2.367 (major diameter of all t3's) then square it and multiply by 100. That will give you the trim number of the wheel. = 40 trim
