Default which turbo?

i have a 00 si with the stock b16. i already have a peakboost ramhorn manifold, downpipe, and dumptube. my goals are about 350-400hp. mostly a daily driver but i am in college so i dont drive that much. i was leaning towards a garrett t3/t67 h.o. turbo....what do you all think? ill be upgrading the fuel system, getting new cams, intake manifold, pistons and rods, and other basic things. tuned with hondata.... nothing crazy yet. there is always the t3/t4 way but i just dont know....any other suggestions for the 400hp mark?

Precision sc44... great spool time and perfect for a street driven vehicle.

if those numbers are your only goal, the t67ho is too much turbo. i mean it can make the power, but i think you can have a better behaving turbo with a broader powerband.

t3/t4 50 trim will be enough on a stock b16. make sure you get it tuned.

Agreed, But I always like to oversize the turbo for a stock motor. They tend to be less harsh on a stock motor. less heat, less backpressure ect.

true. but a stock b16 won't spool a larger turbo as quickly and with that transmission gearing it's gonna rev quick once it does start spooling.

If you're planning to run pump gas, then scratch the 50 trim idea. I would go with the trusty old 57trim. It'll make the power you want and won't break the bank

I have found that even the 50 trim for the b16 can do quite well, for the 350-380 mark. The 57 for the 400-430whp mark. Keep your setup simple a t67 is just ridiculously overkill. Not fun at all on the torqueless wonder.

thanks for all of te replies guys. i guess it will be better to run a t3/t4 turbo so i can still run ac. here in alabama it gets pretty hot and humid during the summer! so a garrett t3/t4, 57 or 60 trim? i know .63 a/r. i think this way i will be a little better off i just dont want to be boosting too soon like when i just want to cruise ya know?

Well, i would read TheShodan's post one more time and pick whichever turbo seems to fit your goals best. The 50 trim is going to spool quite a bit faster, but is limited in its top end power; whereas, the 57 trim is going to spool a bit slower, yet make more power. I dont recall anyone suggesting a 60 trim anywhere. Also, whichever turbo you pick (50 or 57), get that in a .63ar.

Research the engine management options, and choose the one that best suits your needs.

I have Hondata S300, but it was a bit on the expensive side.

i guess im going to wait until i get everything and then see how it is in the end until i decide on the management....but i was just looking around and i noticed that full-race offers the t3/t4 with a stage 3 or stage 5 compressor wheel....what is the difference and which should i get?

i am so unsure about which turbo i want to run...i really am shooting for 400hp and i know eventually i will sleeve the engine too and do more things. i want a turbo that will last, spool with minimul lag, and most of all make the power! i have been looking into the ball bearing turbos too. how much more of a hastle is it to run a ball bearing turbo? i was looking at the smaller gt30.... the Garrett GT3071R. someone throw out some suggestions im new in the turbo scene and there are just so many different ways to go.

im in the similar situation you are.. i have a stock b16 with a few bolt ons and head work, the block is completely stock an pretty healthy, i am going to be ordered my peakboost kit prob. by spring, most likely after tax's because i do need more bolt ons like injectors, half sized rad. and other misc stuff, since this is in a crx not a SI like yours is.. sinces it going to rev high an want to make power in the higher rpm's the .63 A/R is a must, but you already have that covered so stick with that.. now back on track to the T3/T04E turbo family, since im most familiar with them and did all the research on them. you have a choice between 50, 57, and 60 trim.. now your power goals are also very similar to mine, i want more then 300, but no more then 400 since it is a stock motor.. no i reccommend the 57 trim for a few reasons.. i called peakboost an talked to them about about 50 and 57 trim because people on here kept giving different reasons for both.. i was told, that they are both great turbos, the 50 and 57 trim will both reach full boost around 4000 rpm's, no more then 5000, but closer to 4000, thats what i was told on the phone, so for spool characteristic's they are very identical, now of course the 57 trim is a bigger turbo, will make more power at less psi and you WILL have room for improvement, so when you build your block, you dont have to fork out the money for another turbo and at the same time, you wont be putting stress on the 50 trim from pushing it to its limits.. i hope this helps you out alot an will help with your decision.. so my opinion, 57trim with .63A/R.. any more questions? pm me or post it..

yea im really leaning towards the t3/t4 57 trim just because it is so much cheaper. but i really do want to achieve 400hp....with cams, cam gears, i/m, throttle body, pistons, rods, upgraded fuel system with walbro 255lph, and tuned with hondata s300 with a chipped p28. those are my plans. new clutch as well.

you could prob. reach 400whp on stock block with a few bolt ons an peakboost kit with 57 trim.. that was my goal, but i figured ill tune for about 350whp since its a stock block an dont want to blow it up.. its not a daily driver but i want it to be reliable an not blow up ya know? i think im going to throw a thicker headgasket on mine to bump it down to about 9.5:1 to run it more safely ya know?.. think about that.. people are running more then 400whp on stock block with race gas

A lower compression HG isn't going to make it any safer; however, it will allow you to make more power on a lower octane fuel grade. Don't fool yourself into thinking that's going to help...

Stage III only for the exhaust wheel. No need for cams, 400whp will need to be tuned with the 57trim turbo. Stop overthinking. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) ;-)
