Default Turbine F'ed up

well a couple weeks ago i was gettin on my car through 2nd and part of third.. then when i got done and started cuising i kept hearing a tinking sound comming from the manifold area.. i stopped driving it and finally got a chance to take parts off to find this....

im not sure what caused it, the motor still runs and idles fine. i found 5 little thin peices of metal floating around in the manifold (probably parts of the turbine blades). only idea i can think of is slag off the manifold broke loose while iwas gettin on it and chewed up the fins.

anyone else got an idea? this manifold/ turbo are only 2-3 months old

HEY! we got something in common....

i don't know the cause of mine either. could've been a weld off the manifold (which i doubt) or one of my valves chipping. i don't know? i still haven't pulled my head, so i'm unsure. the turbo i got was used, so i never checked it to begin with. you can search my name about my story. the turbo just stopped working all of a sudden. and i found this out when i had the turbo replaced. i only used the turbo for 2 months or something like that.

What type of manifold? I have seen ssautochromes with large chunks of slag near the merge collector- pieces that I could break off with two fingers. I am sure with any heat cycling they would have broken free.

are you running a filter on your turbo? you should take off the compressor side and see what it looks like on that side too. check your spark plugs, maybe even do a compression test. sometimes it could be something chipping off and flying in through there.

like i said on the IM to you. my turbo one day just stopped spinning. it was right after i stalled out in my drive way reversing. it just wasn't building boost. so i popped my hood, and saw the turbine not spinning at all. i took off my net and tried to spin it in the usually direction, no movement. i had to go counter wise just to get it loose from the lock it had and then it spun freely. so mine was definitely had something stuck on it most likely. when i got my turbo, it had 0 shaft play. like it wouldn't move at all. my brand new turbo from garrett even had a little shaft play. so it was weird. my messed up turbo built up some shaft play in a month or two. you might wanna take off your head and check it out.

good luck and take some pics

That sucks. This fall, i had replaced my gaskets for a night of fun. Well, durning the process i had lost a washer. Grabbed a new one, and went playing. Bout 2 hours into it, i lost boost. Car was super slow. Couldn't figure it out, finaly tore of the intake and tried to spin it myself. It was seized. So i took it apart, and wouldn't you know, that damned washer was up in side the manifold, fell down and wedged between my turbo wheel. I'm guessing it happened during idle, cuz it was fine. I'm was sooooo happy, cuz i figured it should have looked like yours. That is wierd though, becuase anything that would of come from your motor, would make your car run bad now.

the compressor side is perfectly fine, shaft still spins freely with no play.. turbo probably only has 5 k miles on it max. ill pull spark plugs tommorrow and see i suppose
