Tube/Fin or Bar/Plate
OK , According to April 20003 vol 19 no 4, Back to basics TurboMag/Turbonetics it cleary state that the bar and plate is a better unit.
If you turn topage48 on intercooler tech. On a tube and fin intercooler sapce is lost from where the joints for sealing are used. So a 3.5 inch core will have tubes only 2.87inch wide..Quote" Unable to maneuver around the machinery,Also, fin design in the charge side, unside the extruded tubes, was limited by the extrusion machine, which impeded the design of the charged side fins geometry to meet individual custom applications. It also states Tube and fin has a larger leakage rate compared to the bar and plate.Furthermore, tube and fin are more susceptible to road damage.also at extreme pressure the tube can ballon up."also , a tube and fin design has a lot of room between rows where the bar and palte unit can get more rows into a givenarea with more area passagewhich means more unitcfm and a more efficient unit. The down fall of the bar and plate is the weight of the cores/unit and the price. It state the tube and find are chaper in MFG costs. I really wanted to get a PWR due to the hype and the PRICE of the tube and fin. like everyone else i only want the best. Which is better...?????

Re: Tube/Fin or Bar/Plate (camp1320.com)
Tube and fin has a much quicker responce for cooling. It is able to change heat a lot quicker then bar and fin. This means tube and fin would deff. work better for all you around the town stop light racers. Like camp said, tube and fin is also lighter. In some racing applications, when a large amount of cooling air is available during transient conditions of boost pressure and tempature, it can give a more uniform cooling of charge air as the lower mass is cooled more quickly by the ambient air.

im think bar &plate are better cuz they have more heat sink, not cheap(more material, heavy) more reliable
Maybe I can get it for around $350. It has a core size of 22"x8"x3".
Would this be good for my integra?

whoa, anyone else see the apc sticker on the table holding the intercooler, be wary of it.
which one(tube and fin/bar and plate) is the pwr intercooler again.

i read that article and they said that bar and plate is better.
they also made a good point that more surface area is better than thickness.

Re: Tube/Fin or Bar/Plate (camp1320.com)
you cant generalize that one type is better than the other.
Some tube and fin are worse than bar and plate. I would take a spearco over other tube and fin products, and i have seen some really bad bar and plate too. Overall the PWR is still the best quality IC ive seen

A fact has to be something that can be proven. Best welds or endtank designs are pretty much peoples opions. Like Geoff said, id take a spearco over alot of other intercoolers as well. Its nice. I also do feel the PWR stuff is a top of the line quality. In my opion, they have great welds as well. As far as marketing goes, I think spearco has done TONS more of that then PWR has. I mean, spearco is more well known then pwr and they dont do much in the way of advertising at all.

Re: Tube/Fin or Bar/Plate (ninesecrx)
i've had both
overall quality on both were great
the PWR's tube and fin seems to be a better design because the tubes would direct air over and below the fins
the bar and plate design seems to just ram air
dunno, cuz i'm ignorant about this stuff, just contemplation
i chose the spearco cuz it looked better

Re: Tube/Fin or Bar/Plate (camp1320.com)
PWR tube and fin
highest quality tube and fin ive ever seen
PWR vs Maxrev (PWR on top Maxrev on bottom)
Maxrev fins (glue)
PWR fins
PWR guts
Maxrev guts
Also, i weighed each on a precision weighing instrument in my bathroom
PWR=14lbs
Maxrev=10lbs
the difference is from the thickness of sheetmetal used for the endtanks and upper and lower caps. the pwr's are stout!

spearco... I got a killer deal on this one (less than 500 before shipping) and it is of a decent quality too. endtanks/ welds not quite as clean as pwr but close.
this intercooler was from camp1320.com BTW... thanx agian.
FIXED sorry had moved files...

Re: Tube/Fin or Bar/Plate (92HB_HB)
i had the intercooler that was in that pic (not that physical one, but the same design/manufacture etc).... that son of a bitch got more heat soaked than a ceramic plate in the microwave.
my next i/c will definatly be a tube-n-fin vs a bar-n-plate
