Default Tranny for Boost

Wassup guys, i know this is a butchered topic, i did a search but i came uppon alot of "gsr vs b16 tranny" and which is better.

I currently have a gsr tranny and i am looking for an lsd. I was going to sell it and try to come uppon a 97 itr tranny. I figured it would be cheaper than doing a quaife in my gsr.

But my question is, will the itr tranny be ideal for a boost set up. I've heard all the stories that the short gearing is bad for boost b/c it won't hold power, etc. What's really true with that? I believe the 97 itr tranny has a 4.4 fd so it is identical to my current gsr. Will there be any differences? What are some pro's and con's of switching these trannies.

Thanks Guys

stick with your gsr tranny. it's got perfect gearing for a boosted honda.

itr is nice with lsd and shorter gears than the gsr, but with the money you will be spending on a new tranny, just spend it on quafe or something else with lifetime warranty. plus, gsr tranny would be more ideal driving around daily like on expressway. im already cruisin at 4K at 80 mph.

^^^ i was going to sell my gsr tranny and put that towards the itr, seeing as my gsr is freshly rebuilt i could get a decent amount for it

if your gsr tranny is in good working order, get the quaife (its what I have gsr trans+quaife+turbo b16) it works great.

Probably more unless you bring the transmission to them or do it yourself.

I wouldn't want to have to drive on the freeway with ITR gears. If you could find an LS 5th to swap in there it might be fun.

I'm currently looking for an LS 5th to swap into a B16 trans (4.40 FD) so I don't cruise at 4,000 rpm at 65mph.

Is the LS tranny really that bad for boost?

The way I see it, I drive like a normal person more than a racecar driver. Therefor 4000 rpm's at 65mph is way to high for me. If you have a car with a 8000 or 8500 redline then fine but i red at 7000. I guess I would have to drive a car with a GSR tranny to see if its THAT much better than my LS.

i use a LS tranny for my LS/turbo and its great. cusco lsd will be in soon. i love being able to cruise at a low rpm.. i dont take it to the track very much, but it feels good on the track esp witthat strong 2nd and 3rd gear full boooooost. it moves good

SORRY THIS IS KIND OF LONG BUT I'VE POSTED ON THIS A COUPLE TIME RECENTLY SO I FIGURED I WOULD JUST ctrl+c and ctr+v, hehe

It really depends on the slick size you'll be running, how much power, etc... With anywhere from 350-550whp you can normally get away with 24.5-25" slicks at which time a GSR tranny would probably be your best bet... If you're making more power than that and want to run 26's I would try the S4C (B16), since you have a bit more rollout...

We've run a straight LS tranny (with Quaife LSD) on Duc's daily driven 700hp B18C/EJ6 in the past and though it brings in the power a bit smoother (only because it takes longer) it still breaks loose... Here's some OLD vids that I just loaded up again (GroundZero.mpg) that I did back in May of 2003 (all of the cars were slow back then since everything was new to us and we hadn't turned up the boost yet), Brian's car was making like 430 on 17lbs., now he drives it at 560whp on 24lbs. with a best of 10.90@136 (slow because he still has shitty traction off the line)... Anywho, you'll also see Duc's car that back then was only making ~500whp and had the LS tranny, though it's bottom end hadn't been tuned watch how the power hits... The second video clip Brian-Boost.mpg is a little more recent (during the summer) and is just Brian and me pulling onto the freeway... As you can see he's not taking it all the way up (shifting ~7-7500rpm where as normally we would go to 9500-10000 and let it tap off the limiter till it catches up each gear) and we didn't get anywhere close to full boost (only around 18lbs.) in 4th gear (note, we rolled around the corner in 2nd.)... I guess I forgot to meantion, Brian runs a straight GSR tranny with Q.LSD...

Right Click and Save Target As:
GroundZero.mpg [~51.4mb]
BrianBoost.mpg [~4.2mb]

for the track with slicks..........the tighter the gearing the better. if its too tight, you off set it with tire size and rev limit. but the b16 tranny is better 99.9% of the time. i think 9 out of 10 of the guys on my fastestfwdstreetcars.com web site run a b16 or b16 hybrid tranny. NO ONE with GOOD et's runs an LS tranny.

if you want a balance of a decent track tranny and decent street tranny, then staying with a straight gsr tranny is an option.

it all depends on your goals, but the LS is only good for trying to raise your top speed. thats it.
