Default Timing question

I've never timed a car before but we need to retard the timing before start boosting.. There is a mark for TDC and there are 3 marks separate from that mark. If I want to retard the timing which direction should the light go? Towards TDC or away from it? It's a D16Z6 motor.. i'm assuming the middle of the 3 marks is the stock marking? thanks!

Get yourself a timing light first. If you're using a stock ECU, you'll need to jump the service connector next to the ecu first. With the motor warmed up you can either retard your base timing by pulling the distributer towards the front of the car or advancing it by pushing it towards the firewall. With the timing gun aimed at the crank pulley you can see the timing marks move. Use those as a guide to retard/advance your timing.

The TDC mark on the crank pulley will start to flash before the TDC mark (reading left to right) on the timing cover to indicate retard, and vise versa for advance.

i'm confused now.. not that it takes much.. if the mark moves away from TDC it is retarding it correct? Isn't stock on the car like 16BTDC? so if i want to retard it i want to go farther from TDC correct? thanks

My car right now is NA, I blew the HG (never changed in 12 yrs oops ) when I have it back on the road I will have it all done to it. I am sleeving the ZC, forged internals, balanced (if money permits), head work (if I can find someone good near me and if I can afford it), I will most likely run a ZDyne, and I want about 20psi out of it but I dunno if my turbo will handle it I cant find compressor maps for a td05-18g. I run on the DX tranny and when I had more car going before I ran 6.5psi on a stock ZC, only tuning is a little extra fuel pressure and I ran a 14.7 @96mph

kewl, del sols are nice...9.5 psi? what fuel management are you using? before I blew my HG I had a crane HI-6s with the boost dependant timing retard I was goign to put in with an FMU and I was going to go to 8 or 9psi....now I am just going to leave the engine out until it is done, hopefully by mid-summer now anyone who wants a vortech fmu and a crane ignition system?

how much u want for the crane 6? We're just retarding his timing a couple degrees and then using the AFC Hack.. hey maybe you know the answer to this.. the one guy when he wrote earlier on this thread said you had to disconnect something before you use the timing light.. what's that all about? i didn't do that

there is a blue plug (well on mine there was) under the dash on the passenger side that you have to jumper.

I am not sure what I want for the crane I would have to check again what I paid for it. Make an offer and I will check my expenses....
