Default Thoughts on Bearing Clearances?

well i dropped a block off today for align honing, and asked him to hone it to a certain spec so that my my main clearance is .0015-.0016. The guy was shocked, he builds alot of motors and he swears that ill have problems on a high HP car. Ive always ran those clearance without any issues. he said to go atleast .0020-.0025 for clearance, and modify the oil pump. I just wanted to see what u guys thought about that. Im going to tell him to give me my own clearance anyways.

That should be good. For higher HP motors, you want to run .001 for every inch in diameter on the journal. FOr example my h22 has 1.89 inch rod journal, so my clearances are .0017-.0018. Depending on your motor you can easily figure out what you need.

The machine shop must do alot of V8's b/c that's the clearance's that they need to make power.

I just put my block together at .0015. If you were building a race motor or planned on runnig thicker oil then .002 would be ok, but for the street .0015 is better, IMO. .0025 would be way too loose. Like my EX

I never run the bearings looser and never had a problem....main bearing clearence is out of spec at .0020 by the factory clearences.......

is he going to algin hone the motor and then give you bearings? and why did you align hone it was the crank binding?

Yes sir! But .0020 is not out of service factory clearences.. I think if you rev the motor high and your around the .0019-.0021 range on the mains its still good becuase your giving your rods enough oil and prevent any future problems..

.0015 for me. I've heard one of the better known engine builders here say he built at least one at .0016. Seems like you're in the ballpark.
