yup, those badboys were on the verge of total meltdown. i wouldnt be surprised if the top ring gave you a hard time coming out of its groove

clean them on solvent, make sure you get all the **** out
take it to a machine shop and have them look at them
they are more likely still ok as long as the ring lands arent damaged and the top of the pistons are ok
the skirts can be polished out and the scars can be smoothen out
that was caused by piston slap.... those pistons didnt seem to be on a block with the right bore

bad idea/waste of time IMO

waste of time? HA
if hes able to spend $500 on a new set of pistons then great, he wouldnt be posting here
if the local machine shop can inspect them for him, once all the carbon built up and **** is clean, then he will know if they are **** or not, they will be able to tell if the pistons are just worn, or if it has any sign of integrity being compromissed
we can only judge what we see on 2 pictures
have someone locally with knowledge make the descision

Re: (earl)
Just rub them on the concrete until they're uniform on the skirts, then get some bondo to fill in the low spots. Let that dry for a bit and put a light coat of paint on the skirts, they'll be good to go.

Re: (wantboost)
ive been in the same situation before. i was sooo close to reusing, but i didnt.
peace of mind is worth a lot of money to me, more than the 450 for a new set of pistons
