Lower resistance, better cooling and some other stuff too I'm sure....

Do you think it's worth it on a street car?

And daily driven? I read that they are really intended for motors that will receive frequent overhauls.

I would never send any of my pistons to Swain Tech again. They come back in an air tight bag and must be 'cured' once opened within 48hrs. Curing means in your car and running.

Also, the coatings are sticky when removed from the bags and some of the coating comes off once you tap the piston into the cylinder and the wd40 also doesn't help keep the coatings on.

I currently have callico coatings on my new pistons. They come already cured which is how a coated piston should come.

Too bad this coating scratches way too easily.

Yeah, when i took those pictures i dropped my camera from about 2 inches on the side of the piston and it scratched it completly. Cheap coating if you ask me but what ever, its included in almost all of their shelf pistons..... so i am not complaining (actually i am)..............

Is this true, do the coatings only last a few passes down the track.

I have torn down a couple motors that had coated pistons put in and i have noticed that all off them seemed to have kept the coating...... but the coating was noticably worn in most cases, aside from the occasional piston slap, but thats besides the point.

What i dont like is the coatings applied to the top of the pistons and valve reliefs, if there is any un-even spots of that coating thats asking for hot spots and in-accuracy. JMO.

To answer your question i would suggest having them coated by a reputable company that has lots off feedback. Do a little research and consider the pros vs the cost.

TBone's coating is sick, I'm running his coated pistons in my built motor.

If anyone needs coating done, pm me or TBone

What is the pricing on the coatings done by T-bone, also what does he use, turn around time etc.

I had mine coated. I had the domes ceramic coated and the skirts dry film coated. Nobody here is going to have any data that proves that coating makes a difference, but theoretically it definitely makes sense.

When we took TBone's motor apart, his coating was still on the pistons. There are many people who have his coating. Boostfed is one of them. I dont think you can get better coated pistons than his.

Skirt coating just wears off over time and then you have an extra .002" piston to wall clearance and piston slap as a bonus.
Dome coating can save the piston top slightly in a melt down. However the heat has to be absorbed somewhere so it melts your head instead. I would rather lose a piston than a head.
Nothing I have ever read or heard has ever convinced me that coatings help a turbo motor. However, if I had an allmotor race car, with the motor coming out every 10 passes, I would consider some of the short term benefits of coatings.
