T5 too big?
I'm new to this forced induction game, so go easy.
I have a guy that is willing to trade me a Garrett T5, eclipse intercooler and wastegate and I was wondering if it would be very compatible with an h22 or h23. T5 sounds big relative to the T3, T4, T3/T4 that I read so much about. I don't have any of the specs on the housing as of yet, but will post when I do.
Any background on the unit would be appreciated, and also things to look for when I go check it out in person.

The T5 is used on the new five cylinder Volvo S40. I am not sure of the specs, but it's the only production vehicle with a T5 that I know of. And no, five cylinder isn't a typo. I think it spools at about 4k rpms on the S40. So it probably wouldn't spool untill 6k give or take on one of our 2.2's. Trust me on this one, find a smaller turbo. Plus, Eclipse intercoolers are pinner. That turbo with such a small side mount, would be a terrible pair, imo.
I would suggest a Garrett T3/TO4E (60 Trim w/ .63 A/R Turbine) It is a nice turbo and isn't too expensive. Probably going to hit 8 lbs. by 4k or less with our motor. Here is a link: http://www.cheapturbo.com
IM me if you have anymore Q's. I live in Seattle, so I could point you in the right direction for tuning, installs, etc.

While your words of caution are wise, I wouldn't do a direct comparison in that manner and say a T5 wouldn't work. You really need to look at engine VE, and specific power output of the S40 if it were in NA form.
Perfect example, my intercooled LS spools a .60 trim turbo at the same rpm as my friend Dave's non-IC Merkur, which runs a 2.3 liter engine with the same exact turbo + .63 turbine housing. Most of this difference is going to be in the head and how restrictive it is... and most OEM turbo cars have more restrictive heads.
I have *no* idea *anything* about the newer Volvos, so I could be completely wrong and your assumption is correct. Just trying to advocate keeping an open mind.
So, anyway, I also would recommend a more commonplace turbo, you don't want to be a guinnea pig. Or do you?

Thanks for the help. I think he might be mistaken when he says T5.. I'll ask him again. He said the turbo has around 10k miles on it, but has no shaft play, and is very clean.
Again, thanks for the help.

I was under the impression most of the newer Volvos got Mitsu's with the 18G compressors, similar to what comes on the Greddy B-series kits.
Again, I'm not very familiar with anything past the 240/740/760 era, verify for yourself if you can.

Umm...actually, on these volvos, the T5 is referring to the engine, not the turbocharger. The "2.5L/218-hp turbocharged I-5, DOHC, 4 valves/cyl" is termed a "T5" engine...turbo 5-cylinder.
I would say with 99.9999999% confidence that the stock Vulva doesn't rock a Garrett T5.

Re: (J. Davis)
Dont they come in a 16g trim as well? The guy sounds like he knows nothing (less than me even). I'm trading him for a 200 dollar set of wheels (maybe), but I might ask him for cash.. You think it's worth nearly that much with a supposed 10k on the turbo?
How do you think this will do on a stock H23? I'm also unsure of what engine management would best suit this setup. I've heard hondata doesn't work with the P13/OBDI
It's not my intention to be annoying by dragging this post up so often, but I need the information. Thanks.

TD05-18g is a mitsubishi turbo. it is a turbo that the mitsu owners woudl upgrade to. It'sd not the same as a Garret T5 turbo. it's more like a decent sized t3 turbo.

Re: (oscarmayer)
Looks like S40 didn't get the TD05-18T like I ASSumed, the newer V70R does.
S40 gets one of three different turbos:
Mitsu TD04L-14T p/n 49377-06008
Mitsu TD04L-12T p/n 49377-06050
Mitsu TD04L-12T p/n 49377-06150
That's smaller than the SOHC Greddy kit's 15G compressor, you might be able to hit 200whp off one of those turbos but not any more.
The only Volvo that got Mitsu TD05 of any trim were:
89-90 740 turbo of uncertain specs (shows listings for the usual T3 for the same year, too) that ran TD05-12B
Only the 850/T5-R is showing any turbos of notable size, TD04 with 13G, 15G, and 16T trim compressors depending on the year, and the V70R got a TD04-18T analgous to the Greddy B-series turbo and good for 350whp at most.

Get pictures. If he's selling a STOCK DSM intercooler and STOCK wastegate with it (aren't they all internal WG's anyways?), then I'm thinking the turbo would probably be either a STOCK T25. Either way, you can find all those parts for under $200 used.
But if it's a TD05, then it'll probably be a 16G (common DSM turbo upgrade). That would probably be a good deal for $200 though.
