Default T3 Compressor Swap .42 to .60

I have a garrett t3 .42\.48 that i bought on ebay remanufactured.
After much research i quickly realized that there is no way this
turbo is going to support power throughout the rpm range on my
gs-r with a b18c1. I have thought about selling the turbo and getting
another, but i think i will take too much of a loss that way.

My thought was to swap the compressor side to a .60.
I was trying to follow a few threads on here but they either
got hijacked half way through or never got to the point.

If i was to do this

1. What would be involved? Is it pretty much plug and play?
On one thread it said you have to machine some of the material from the .60.

2. Would the turbo have to be reballanced once it is complete?

3. Is this all i would need to complete this project?
Will the backing plate from the .42 fit the .60?

Thanks Guys,
Chris

It's simple.. Pull the blades, backing plate, and housing off and replace with the 60.... You're supposed to have it balanced... I didn't. It will shorten the life of the turbo if you don't tho

he can always somewhat balance it by using a marker...but usually youd replace it w/ the same wheel...in this case he isnt...so its still unbalanced...

Wow, are you guys high?

The housings come off without the blades, at least for sure on the turbine side all you do is remove the size bolts that hold the housing on, slip it off, and slide on the new one and re-tighten bolts.

Thats what i thought, thanks Mike.
So that would mean it would not have to be reballanced right?

you would have to swap the 60 trim wheel and compressor housing. And also, the turbine wheel/shaft is balanced independantly from the compressor wheel, so there is no need to balance the unit. It may be a good idea to mark it and make sure it goes back to its original place.

even with the .48 turbine and .60 trim on a gsr, its still to small in my opinion. I didn't even like that set up on my SOHC.

if he gets a bigger compressor housing, it may not go to the backing plate that is on there and he would have to change that too.

Damn, im probably better off just selling this .42\.48
and getting a bigger turbo.

There is a guy on HMT that just swapped the housing and said that made
a big difference.

I would suggest getting a larger turbo also.

Both sides of your turbo would need updgrading as well as the wheels.

Interesting idea just my .02 i run the same exact turbo on my b16, the garrett t3, .42/.48 and it actually is not bad, full boost by 2200 and pulls almost to redline, but you can feel it running out of air. But in my opinion its a GREAT street turbo with the quick spool and immediate power.

Its just gonna die in the top end on a B18C motor

It'll just **** you off in the long run, as your thirst for more power happens eventually (it does to all who are boosted) this will just kickyou in the nuts knowing in the top end you motor just doesn't pull like it should.

the housing you have shown is from a 60trim turbo... it will not fit your turbo, the wheel on your turbo is too small

I did this swap, and I measured both of the wheels. The larger side (major I believe) are the same size, and the minor (small side of the blades) are different.

Iam in the same boat but i got a 60trim. Would u suggest he makes it a t3/t4? or would the 60 trim be enough for a gsr??? what about a Ls?

Noob question here. So a T3 is smaller than a T3/T4? Sounds like a T3 is almost the same as a gt28rs as far as power is concerned and power band. Let me know. Also. The smaller the trim and a/r for example, .42/.48 spools faster but runs out in the top end vs a .57/.63? Sorry for the Noob question

T3s come in different sizes, but i don't think a t3 60trim is no where near the efficiency of a gt28rs.

for a b18, i wouldn't even consider anything smaller than a t3/t4 50trim .63AR. My cousin has a LS w/ t3 60trim .63AR, its got nice touque down low (2200-4000RPM), but up top is so disapointing. Its aggravating like blueballs.
