Default Synapse 50mm wg, first impression...

Well, one of my distributors called and offered a hell of a deal on a Synapse 50mm gate to try it out. I figured, what the heck, for less than cost on a 38mm TiAL, i'll give it a shot, i wanted to check it out.

Now, this just came in this morning, hence the title "first impression", so this has nothing to do with how it performs, i'll update this when i get a chance to test it. Hopefully it works better than it looks like it's put together.

I'm sure some will think i'm making this stuff up, that it didn't really come out of the box this way, and that's fine, i'm not here to convince anybody. I really have no reason to make up stuff like this and make a post about it. In my opinion, this gate is typical chinese quality.

There are scratches all the way around the top of the gate, looks like maybe the fixture they use to hold the top and bottom together when they're bolting them together is what is causing those scratches, they're consistent all the way around.

Looks like hondabond or something similar is used on all the mating surfaces.

One of the bolts holding the top and bottom together was half way out, right out of the box, no bullshit.

The hole for one of the ports is off center in the machined flat spot for it.

There are machining marks in the "grooves" for where the bolts go in, just bad machining.

Again, i'm not saying any of this affects performance, just a look into the manufacturing quality of these from what i can see so far. There was a lot of talk about how not everything made in China is cheap quality, but my opinion is that these are on the level of the ebay stuff as far as build quality and quality control (loose bolts, etc).

Oh dear... maybe some of the other users who have this wastegate can chime in?

Now, was this "hell of a deal" due to the fact that maybe the distributor of yours might have gotten a first run of the product, saw that it was machined poorly and wanted to pawn it off for cheap? Or maybe the distributor wanted to see what was really inside of the unit, and decided to take it apart. Who knows-- but I do know that just basing a sole opinion on one unit is a little rough.

Not trying to start anything, i don't really care-- I run a tial, but it just seems that from the people who have actually received this product, have nothing but good things to say about it- and maybe we could get a chance to see where this particular unit originated from, before making assumptions about the quality of the product based on the end user. Did you speak to your distributor and ask if this is the way it came?

Is this the Synapse Motorsports up in upstate NY, or another company by the same name?

I went to Synapse to run my car on the dyno before. I don't recall them having any machining equipment.

doubtful, I have a very early mode, ours doesn't even have the logo on the top and it's condition was WORSE than Tony1's right out of the box

the springs, flanges etc.. came in zip lock baggeies as well, i see that the packaging has since changed

They don't use diaphragms in the Synapse Wastegates and BOVs

I just got it in, next time a situation comes up where a gate is easy to test and i'm having boost creep problems, we'll give it a shot and see if it solves them.
