Stock ignition or MSD Digital 7? 500hp+ B16 on E85
Hey I was wondering what you all think about the MSD Digital 7 ignition. I bought my EM1 with it on there, made 450whp on 20lbs or so on pump gas. Ive talked to a few guys, they seem to think that it is more hassle than is worth since my Hondata S300 should be able to tune most of the features I need...
Im in the process of rebuilding and converting to E85 and hopefully shooting for over 500whp with a gt35r; wont the stock Honda ignition system handle that? Its not a daily driver but will see the streets and track occasionally. Are there any real benefits that the MSD can offer that the stock ignition and S300 cant?? I would rather stick with the stock distributor and sell the MSD if it isnt gonna create any problems.
Thanks for all your input. No ****-talking and telling me I need to use the search button and research because I have; now Im asking for positive advise from people who have dealt with this situation before and know what theyre talking about...

Im thinking the same thing, sell the msd and just use the stock distributor. You think the coil is the weak link though huh?

HAHA. Are those aftermarket coils a stock replacement or do I have to run one of those janky external ones? I would rather it look as stock and clean as possible...

Running an external coil off the ignitor is just asking for stuck on side of road. you either keep it completely stock and gap down the plugs or run a coil and a box. You certainly dont need a 800 dollar digital 7 box. You can run a summit digital box with crane ps92n coil or a crane fireball box or mallory hifire box all with the crane coil. If you have money you can just get a m&w pro10 and crane ps92n coil and be done with it and have plenty of ignition for whatever you want to do with the car.
Stock ignition will work but aftermarket will give you better burn and more low/mid range torque

Thanks for the input. I think I'll ditch the digital 7 and try one of the options you listed. Now I gotta figure out who will buy the MSD from me...

Re: Stock ignition or MSD Digital 7? 500hp+ B16 on E85
I have been running the stock ignition at 500hp for many years (E85 too for over 4 years now). Had to gap to 0.018" for anything over 22psi.
I used an MSD Blaster SS coil a long time ago. Even spent a long time fabricating a nice bracket for it. It crapped out and left me stuck on the side of the road. Only time Integra has ever broke down. Ripped that out and went back 100% stock. Been fine and no problems since.

Yes it is sad but seriously true. I'm a dealer Honda tech so I'm by no means stupid, but i lack experience in the aftermarket an high end turbo builds. Most of the people on here who like to flame others constantly have no experience in the real world anyway lol they just sit on the computer in thier parents basement and talk **** to people to feel better about their poor pathetic lives (no one on this particular thread yet).
Thanks for all of you who do have real experience in this area and are kind enough to lend me a hand without shittalking. hopefully I can return the favor to a few of you since I do work at Honda, I have access to some pretty awesome resoueces and discounts the general public doesn't...

Re: Stock ignition or MSD Digital 7? 500hp+ B16 on E85
Ya I think Im going to try the stock ignition with the plugs gapped way down, and see how that works. The MSD is up for sale on Honda Marketplace; if I have problems with my coil, Ill see about converting to the trigger and COP. I dont really have the cash for that right now but when my build is finally done, it might become a priority real quick...

Over 500hp E85 completely stock ignition here, bkr7e's at .016-.018, had to gap them down once I got over 450hp. I will be going COP or Digi7 Prog on my new motor though.
Neptune is no different than any other OEM Based setup, the Pro-10 will work just fine, personally I prefer Neptune over Hondata anyway, especially the Demon Boards.
