Stock Engine & Turbo Charging

Stock Engine & Turbo Charging
In general, is it an acceptable practice to attach a performance enhancing turbocharger to a stock engine without changing anything such as pistons, or crankshafts?
Also on a side note, if my main preference was to accelerate quickly and then to stop accelerating at a certain velocity, would it make more sense to search out a turbo charger thats focus is on the low rpm range, or the high rpm range?
I have a 1995 acura, non-v-tec, 1.8 litre b18b engine, it seems to me that the acceleration on my car naturally kicks in at high rpms, but not so much in the low range.
