Default steam/smoke coming out of valve cover breather?

i'm not sure if its smoke or steam...

i popped open my oil cap with the car off and i saw steam/smoke coming out of there...
its the same steam/smoke as if you dripped oil on your valve cover when hot...

my car is overheating- no mix of oil and coolant, and coolant level is steady...

could it just be oil thats burning up from being too hot?

Get a oil temp guage.
Install that catchcan.
Run with 15-50W Full synthetic unless you have an oil cooler.

Vapors escaping are normal.

Word

I can smell the oil vapor coming out of my vented catchcan in stop-and-go highway traffic. Yummy!

It's normal, steam and oil vapor comes out. Steam is from exhaust gas that makes it around your rings. You can feel it puff pretty good too, some of that is just pistons moving up and down

i still didn't get a compression check, but im pretty sure its steam
i mean i had oil burn before and sitting in my garage, the oil would smoke and leave smoke lingering in my garage...
this however, when it comes out of the breather, it disapears almost immediately

You should take your oil cap off with the motor running, it'll have a lot of steam but it's not worth worrying about. I freaked the first time I saw it, but compression is good so fuggit.

What's the symptom of the overheating, just the temp gauge going up? Probably as simple as a thermostat!

yeah the steem is normal, at least I hope so since mine does it as well...

I'm having the same issue with overheating sometimes. just the tem gauge goes up sometimes in traffic maybe after boosting... but not all the time, and when I turn the heater on it goes right back down... does yours do this?

I thought I just needed to bleed the coolant system so I drained and refilled with honda coolant, bleed acording to the helms and still overheats..? at least the gauge says so, but everything else is fine. no leaks or mixing as well...

do you have DP or mani real close to the radiator? I'm wondering if that can cause this?

exactly what im experiencing!
i haven't changed the thermostat yet, so im waiting to do that this weekend..
the turbo manifold and downpipe are closer to the a/c lines but im gonna wrap the downpipe this weekend too.

i think it has to do with the slimline fan on my radiator.. no overheating happened until i put this in (b18bturbo slimline running as puller fan)
i think it has to do with the fact its not as efficient of a housing like the stock one... (stock one covers the whole radiator... this one doesn't

what type of turbo manifold do you run?
Do you use a stock radiator?

ramhorn style

stock radiator with b18bturbo slimline fan running as puller config.
regular coolant mixed with water (70/30)
downpipe runs on driver side (near a/c compressor)

coolant needle stays horizontal for most driving, unless im driving a while then goes up 3/4 to redline... i usually turn on the heater then before it gets too hot

needle usually goes up in stop and gro traffic... (where fan is doing the cooling work, instead of air)

My friend's built b16 has some blowby at idle like this. Is it normal for built motors to sometimes do this even when there is nothing wrong with them? There is no reason that the engine should be doing this. Its been doing it ever since he put it in.

is it smoke or steam?

I'm thinking about working on my cooling system... looking at possibly a new radiator....
gonna try a new thermostat first

I think its smoke. For some reason I thought I heard somewhere that some built engines can get a little blowby and its normal. Maybe i'm wrong though

These are your problems. The EL manifolds add a tremendous amount of heat in the Engine bay.

Solutions:
Ceramic coat Manifold, turbine housing, downpipe.
Oil cooler
Fluidyne radiator
2-3 drops of liquid soap in radiator
Run with your heater on always venting at your feet
Vented CF hood
Baffling in your bumper
better fan

You are right, its blowby and its normal. The question is, is how much is healthy? A leakdown test will answer that question.

I was looking at this for track use--- Does that seem to make things cooler for anyone on here?

all i know is the motor was built with 190 compression across (9:1) and 0% leakdown on all four

yeah i saw that list as the things u did to your car on another thread...
what does the heater do exactly when you turn it on?
can you replicate that?

I don't believe those leakdown #'s. 0% is very bad! Are you making those numbers up?

Its a 2nd radiator not exposed to all the hot engine bay temperature.
