Default Soldering questions, for chipping uberdata

hey guys im about to chip my ecu (p06) for uberdata, just a couple quick questoin about the soldering, because im doing this in my electronics class for extra credit i have access to a bunch of soldering irons, etc, the one im going to use has a degree dial and it goes from 300-900, what degree should i set it at so i dont burn up my ecu?? im using the braided copper solder wick to take up the old solder, depending on how hot i have the iron, how long should i push on the braid onto the ecu w/ the soldering iron?? thanks.

also im assuming all of you who have chiped your ecu's go from the back side of the board??

I just did mine at home with a 15W soldering iron, so it is like one of the smallest you can get atleast where I was at. I had to hold it there until I saw the solder being sucked up into the wick. I soldered and desoldered everything from the back of the board.

I didn't even use desoldering braid, I just have someone melt one side and I suck it out once it melts on the other. Goes real quick. Then again if you don't have a partner it's probably harder. Turn the iron up until it melts the solder, doesn't need to be any hotter than that.

It should be hot enough you can solder the joint in under a second but not too hot, just enough to get the job done quick. Desoldering with wick takes me a few seconds a pad and I have to use a more powerfull iron. I use a 15watt to solder them but I find the 15 is not enough to get the braid hot enough to desolder because the braid absorbs a lot of heat. I usually give it about 5 seconds per pad when desoldering and if that does not get it all out I come back to that one later to avoid getting it too hot and lifting a trace. Usually there is a pad or two everytime that all the solder does not come out after a try or two so I flip the ecu over and get the rest from the top which almost always gets the rest. If you are using a decent 50watt or higher soldering station you will probably use the same temp for both soldering and desoldering as long as it can hold the temperature pretty stable, just make sure its not too cool or too hot.

I use a one of those little rubber solder suckers when I chip ecus. I just heat it up from one side and suck out the other. Goes really fast once you get the timing down.

I use a 20w iron but I have no idea how hot it is. I would say I have to hold mine to the board for about 3 sec before the solder melts. Maybe try desoldering a few other connections on a junk board to see.

desolder sucker, set heat to about 375c, if you use a desolder wick 425c works good. As for soldering the new parts, try about 375c, it should melt the solder almost instantly onto the joint without touching the solder to the iron. Goodluck
