Default solder tail or through hole

i was just wondering the difference between the two becuase i am getting a zif socket and i need to know

Go with a zif socket. Its only 5 bux and makes taking chips out very easy.

you will be able to find a visual description from any parts supplier, aka digikey.com or jameco.com.

Also, I think you're terminology is mixed up. You're either talking about through-hole and surface mount or solder tail and machined tool.

It's like if your choices were apples and oranges or cars and bikes, and you requested weather to choose an apple or a bike.
