The same thing happend with me. It smoked at idle but not while driving or in boost and my compression was good. I had a bad valve seal on the exhaust side.

Is it burning oil? If so it's most likely the piston rings. Does it make smoke when you get into boost? That's another symptom of bad rings. Do a compression test.

I had the have exact same problem, with almost the same set up. I have a turbonetics t3/t4. It could be your piston rings, or your valve seals, but the problem you describe sounds exatly like mine and I just replaced the motor, and it's still doing it. When I'm driving no smoke, but when I take an exit ramp and stop at a light at the end, I get a puff of smoke. I think it may be the turbo leaking a little bit of oil, which can happen with Ball bearing turbos from what I hear. I think that this may be due in part to my shitty oil return line. There is a slight bend upwards in it so oil may be pooling up and backing it up into the turbo, but under driving conditions where your oil is under more pressure, it may not be bad enough to back up the oil in the line. I don't know, this is just my guess. What kind of oil return line are you using? As I said, I don't think it's the valve seals, or bad pistons because I've had the same problem through two motors now.

same **** happened to me recently with my motor... Built the motor, had valve seals and guides checked and everything was in spec. Pulled the head the other weak and took it to another machine shop to have the head inspected and they claim everything is good...Nothing sucks more than putting a new sleeved motor together and having it smoke.

From what I've seen on my car and a few others bad valve seals don't really smoke in boost only when it's pulling a lot of vacuum like on decel and at idle at stop signs and ****. If it's smoking while getting on it, it's either the turbo or rings. From my experience at least.
