Smoking dipstick? help...
Well, i've noticed that a little amount of gray smoke came out of the dip stick hole when the car is idling. But i ddint worry about that until today, today i was driving and decided to play around a little. Floor 2nd and everything is fine shift to 3rd at almost the end of third, A whole bunch of smoke came out of my engine bay and i thought my motor had gone to ****. I pulled the car over and pop the hood, nothing is wrong or leak or oil or coolant whatever anywhere, but i noticed that the dipstick is not in tightly and smoke is coming out of it. so i guess all that smoke come from the dipstick hole, when i rev it a little more smoke also come out. I dont know if this is normal but i dont think it is. The car drive completely fine, but is there something wrong with the car? I wanted to check the compression but dont have access to a tester right now.

Ha, where do you think the smoke might be coming from?

definately check your compression and perform a leak down test if you can access the tools. also check your pcv valve, I had a the same problem before!

Its not always the rings but a good possibility. I had that problem on the dyno this past weekend with a new block. Spittin' a crapload of oil out the dipstick but no smoke anywhere else. My seal on the dipstick is burnt to crisps. If its the rings you would see oil coming out the tailpipe simultaneously. I know i didn't have any smoke coming out the tailpipe. Just the dipstick hole. Get a metal dipstick and see what happens.

For it to be pushing out the dip stick its probably quite bad, you not over fill with oil or anything dumb are you?

blowby is caused by losing compression due to bad piston rings or ringlands. basically, the oil below your piston is escaping past the ring into the combustion chamber where it is burned and produces that wonderful smoke you are seeing. I small amount of blowby is normal, but anything significant will show up on a compression test.

Some blowby is definitely normal. Maybe your PCV is clogged/plugged?

I was gonna say.... I'd be looking more towards the PCV system being fucked up / inadaquate than the rings shot. I was blowing oil out of the oilcap (with it screwed shut!) on my PCV-less LS/T...
this has happened to my friends with DSM's before, it turned out that the oil dip stick was just coming loose because it was worn out, and oil was coming back out of the hole, spewing around and smoking because of the heat. He replaced the dipstick with a new oem one, and problem solved.
IMO it would be better for honda's to remove the pcv all together and go with a endyn type breather catch can. The pcv valve works only under light throttle or vacuum, so when you are at WOT or under boost the valve is shut thus causing even more crank case pressure.

The most popular one for the GSR, the STR, has been discontinued. I see that Venom has one for the GSR and there are a number of sites that still might have the STR for other cars such as Civics. I'm not sure how accurate the reading will be when using a dipstick for a Civic but the main purpose is to seal the dipstick hole. Reading the oil level with the STR stick is impossible anyway so always have a stock one on hand when checking the oil level.
You can try JC Whitney online or Importsports in Denver, Colorado. I know for a fact Importsports has some GSR ones in stock because I should be receiving mine tomorrow from them.

I was using the STR metal one but that got "thrown away" during my motor rebuild so I had to get another one.
There are two different Venom ones. One has no metal rod and the GSR one has a long metal rod so it extends it out over the header. You should double check though.

that would be awesome if it was just the dipstick... would be FAR off from my luck, if it was my problem I would have blown ringlands, scared cylinder walls, and a warped head... at least.
good luck!
good luck!
