Default Sleved LS/Vtec Ring End Gap to Much?

Hey guys! Need some opinions on my Ring end gap. Is this 2 large?

Setup: ERL sleved 84mm B18A LS/Vtec
goal 500+hp

pistons: JE 84mm 9.1.1 compression

Piston to wall clearance:
1-.0045
2-.0045
3-.0045
4-.0045

I have not done any modification to the rings. But when i started assembly on my engine this weekend i started to see the "out of box ring gap". (I have not modified the rings in any way.) I used the corospoonding piston to set the ring in the bore 1/4 of the way down

JE recommends :
top ring - .0050
middle ring - .0055
oil ring - .015

Honda Recommends:
top ring - .008 - .014
middle ring - .016 - .022
Oil Ring - .008 -.028

And this is what i came up with:

cyl -1 - 4
top - .009
mid - .019
oil - .018

If i go by the piston / piston ring manufacture's tolerances I am way out of spec. But if i go by Honda's service limit im in a happy medium.

What do you guy's think? I would just call ERL peformance but they arent open on the weekend. Do you guys think i should have ERL send me a set of 84.5mm rings and i shave the rings for perfect tolarances? Or just run that ****?

May not be right forum but i am going FI.

Thank you in advance.

Nick

With the recomendations that JE gives, you need to mult that number by the bore in inches, that .0050 you say is not the gap, just part of the equation. I have had good results with a top gap at .018-.019 and middle at .023-.024. Oil rings usually wont need to be touched.

What do you mean by the equation? The instruction sheet that came with the JE pistons and rings said specifically (for turbo/nitrous street strip to use thos clearances). I dont understand what you mean by the equation? will you please elaborate?

piston cylinder bores
1 - 3.3076
2 - 3.3072
3 - 3.3075
4 - 3.3076

piston skirt diameter
1 - 3.3031
2 - 3.3027
3 - 3.3030
4 - 3.3031

Piston skirt clearance
1 - 0.0045
2 - 0.0045
3 - 0.0045
4 - 0.0045

thank you for your reply's

You are dealing with too many numbers, keep it simple. The equation im talking about will give you the recomended ring end gap. I cant remember the exact equation, I have it written down at work. but like I said, myself and the other honda tech and my shop run 018-019 on top and 023-024 in the middle with the kind of goals you have. Sorry I cant be detailed, im not at the shop, just at home. With the larger 2nd gap, it will decrease the preassure inbetween the rings, decreasing oil consumption and improving seal. I hope someone else would chime in, im not in the state of mind to write a lot, it is the day after new years.

search "ring end gap" too, you will find more info

Bore x .0050 for top
Bore x .0055 2nd

But if you use that equation, your gaps will come up very tight. JE will recomend a looser gap if you call them, they just dont stay updated on what is currently working well.

PM'd you

Im just talking about Ring End Gaps. i just gave you the rest of the specifications for your "equation". This motor will be daily driven. and im pretty sure JE would have supplied better instructions if i was to use some math formula. I have also read through there ring catalog and could not find the answer i was looking for. It specifically says that they like to use tighter gaps to decrease blow by. It also recommends ordering one size bigger rings, to shave them to fit there clearances.

You and I are just not on the same page

thank you for helping tho

thank's for the reply

Hmmmmm.... I think i am beginning to understand what you are tlaking about. let me look into it a little.

I have not recieved your pm

EDIT: I see what you are completely talking about.. I wasnt reading the instruction chart correctly. I feel so DUMB

with your equation:

top ring - .016
middle - .018
oil ring - min gap = .015

Thank you so much for helping me out

But I would not run the clearances that thight. Can anyone else here back me up on this?
