Default Silver Surfer

Im looking into getting the Surfer for my 2.0L. Ive talked to Mac alot but want some feed back from owners. IDK if its worth the extra 500 to go ball bearing. Goals is about 400 plus on the streets. Post your thoughts and how u liked it.

BB is always worth the added cost. Longer durability. Quicker transient response (re spool) water cooler turbo last longer as well.

Im assuming that the turbo is $1000+ brand new?

Let me ask you a question. How much are you spending on engine management?

Dual ball bearing Garrett cartridges are much stronger than the journal bearing units. The thrust bearing is the Achilles heel of journal bearing units and typically the main failure point. The DBB cartridge eliminates the need for a thrust bearing and thus can handle much higher thrust loads.

Plus you pick up transient response, better recovery between shifts, and around 300-500rpm in initial spool (DBB doesn't make a huge difference in initial response like some think). Also once you've run a DBB turbo you won't want to go back to journal bearing, trust me.

It all depends on what you want. Do you have space restrictions? The BB is a little wider than the JB (at least mine is). IIRC his BB units have a upgraded cage (want to say steel) as well. The JB doesn't require water, although it is highly recommended. It only helps you in every situation - longevity, cool down, temperatures, etc...

I guess I don't know what you are asking exactly. Feedback on what? Either you want the benefits of BB or you don't LOL! Do you need pictures? Some might disagree, but most people absolutely do not need a BB turbo.

For some people it isn't an absolute requirement but it does make life better... Especially if you plan to push a given turbocharger size near the limit at high pressures, the lack of a thrust bearing makes the BB cartridge much more reliable at those levels.

if it's a money issue, just get jb.... make sure to have extra money for the rest of the turbo supporting mods as things will always come up.

Well the Silver Surfer regardless of bearing system is a very potent and capable turbocharger at 59lb/min. If your setup is capable you'll be able to make full use of the turbochargers power capability. If this isn't going on a built engine then it's a bit overkill as you won't be able to make anymore power over 400 reliably but the turbocharger would still be responsive and make solid torque figures while still giving you room to grow if building an engine in the future.

What kind of manifold are you planning on running?

I had an SLS mini ram, which is similar to the Quick4, and it made for a very responsive setup with a GT3255 (also from Mac).

Good choice

There's two build threads on here I need to link you to once I find them, both are 2 liter B VTEC builds using the Silver Surfer.

Here is the 5th page of LOWLUDE22s build thread of his 2 litre B VTEC build running a Silver Surfer.

https://honda-tech.com/forced-induct...3017676/page5/

The videos give you a decent idea of how it performs although I suggest you read all 7 pages to get a good idea of how the SS performs and it's capabilities.
