Second hand Turbos
Hey guys, i was just wondering if you would use a second hand turbo on your cars.... Reason being that there are alot of them out there and they are fairly cheap!!
Also i hear the play in the shaft is important, but what else should i look for when purchasing a second hand item......
Thanks in advance....

I bought a 14b off a guy with 100% positve feedback from 112 people on ebay, he said it was in great condition. I recieved the turbo, it had ZERO shaft play, I bolted it up only to find it had blown seals. Now I gotta rip it all apart and find another turbo. Be careful.

yeah when your buying a second hand turbo try to make sure it has minimal shaft play and no shaft play in and out. Also look to see if there's excessive oil on the fins or on the turbo. If the turbo's drinched in oil pass it up man it's going to need new seals. If your pulling it out of the car look at the mielage and cond. of the engine your pulling it out of. That can pretty much overall tell you what the turbo has been through. Hope I helped a little.

I bought a second hand turbo and was completely misled on the "flange size", now I get to make myself an adapter plate! Just make sure you know what you may be getting into

There is no such thing as a good used turbo; there are only good rebuildable cores. TRUST me, I am the one and only junkyard warrior.

You're a junkie... I was dubbed junkyard warrior a couple years back.
I'm not saying you can't get a good used turbo... I'm just saying the odds are against you. $60 for a rebuild kit and an hour to install it is a good deal, IMO.

There is alot of crap out there and it kinda sucks when you spend a little while to pull stuff of so you can even test the turbo just to find its locked up or has wobble to it..
If you wanna find a good turbo its best to know what turbos are on what cars.. And if you find a car that has the hood open and you can clearly see the turbo than its probably bad or someone else would have had it by now..
But yes, paying $50 for a turbo and $60 for a rebuild kit is alot cheaper then buying it rebuilt from somewhere..
