Default Is this a scam?

I sent my turbo in for a rebuilt estimate, and the guy says I had gas in my oil. He also said my bearing is bad, the shaft needs adjustment, the housing is messed up, and the "backwall" or something like that needed repair too. I don't know what he meant by housing and backwall, but he said the total would come to $450. What the hell? $450?! I thought a rebuild was supposed to cost like $99? I can't pay $450. Was he just trying to rip me off or what? What should I do?

You know what? **** this. All these people keep wanting $90 and hour to rebuild my turbo. I'm ordering a kit online and doing it myself then getting it balanced for $40 bucks.

Yes, they did mine and did a great job, along with great CS. The downside is it gets pricy, the rebuild itself was something like $350 but the bells and whistles somehow bumped me up to $750!

Rebuilding it yourself?

$750? That's a gold mine to a high school kid like me. I don't have half that. Or 1/4 of it. I need to get this done as cheap as possible. The reason the place wanted $450 is because they wanted to put in a new shaft too. Well I had them send the turbo back with an invoice with all the listed problems. I've been calling around and so far the average price for the standard kit+rebuild+balance is $250. I'm just going to do that. My car isn't even driveable until I get this done, I sold off my old exhaust manifold..heh. To hell if my turbo doesn't perform like a brand new Drag kit... I need my car driveable.
